Discovering Music

I am a curious guy. I want to discover new things. And I want to use blogs to do that.

It works great in my business. I post things, read other blogs, and learn new stuff every day.

It works great in politics. I found out that John Kerry won every state but Vermont today around noon today at Slate (which is technically not a blog but i got there from a blog).

But what about music? I want to find new music.

Tom Watson recommends Johnny Thunder. I go but it.

Jason Kottke recommends Broken Social Scene. I go buy it.

But these guys, as good a source of music ideas as they are, don't blog about music that often.

I want music blogs. Can you send me some recommendations?

Fred, I need to do more music - I've added an "iPod" section to the lists and promise to update it with one-line reviews. But I do tend to look backward a lot - new music sneaks in, it's not the main thing....Recommendation I give everybody, if you don't already follow him, pick up anything by Richard Thompson and be prepared for a 10-year journey of musical discovery.

I would recommend two sites: blogcritics.org and popmatters.com

Fred-

Little did you know that I actually began life not only as a musician---I was once the only guy in Silicon Alley w/a keyboard credit on a Kool Moe Dee album--but also as a music critic for audiophile and record collector magazines (I still sometimes do liner notes).

For my money, the best albums I heard last year were

1. Joe Strummer - Streetcore....an unwittingly powerful, personal, last will and testament.

2. Fred Hersch - Live at the Village Vanguard...An impeccible thinker at the piano cooking live w/ his trio

3. Ludacris - Chicken and Beer.....the album is filthy, don't let yr kids near it, but it's the funniest album I've heard since Richard Pryor's That Nigger's Crazy. I laughed out loud at least half a dozen times the first time I heard it. True lyrical ingenuity. The cat's a master of words.

4. Gillian Welch - Soul Journey..."I wanna do right but not right now" line of the year.

5. Damien Rice - O ... It's a little purple, lushly romantic, perfect stuff for a WB teen angst show, but weird, simple and pretty too.

6. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers....I found their earlier albums too flip and ironic...but every joke works here, a few of the melodies are downright gorgeous, and they even had a hit.

7. The Libertines - Up the Bracket...picked this up in the UK last spring...great quirky British punk like the early Kinks meet Television.

Internet radio as it should be, listeners rate the music, upload new tunes and requests, discuss them.

and they play some of the artists mentioned like Gillian Welch, Damien Rice, Richard Thompson (search the playlist and check out the ratings).

there's a business model in there someday, as an affiliate of iTunes, a channel on XM/Sirius or digital cable maybe.

radio reloaded.

I sometimes post recommendations on my music category, but blogcritics is definitely where you'll get the biggest review output. Although not a blog, you might be interested in Metacritic too (I assume you already know about Allmusic, the biggest music database out there).

There are two great music blogs that I read. One is from a guy in Canada and his timing has been perfect as the bands he writes about always seem to be coming through San Francisco.
http://www.chromewaves.net/ He has mp3's for download every week as well.

the other one which I recently started reading is
http://burnedbythesun.blogspot.com/

Hope you find them useful.

You don't need a blog. You need one or two people with impeccable taste in music to tell you what to buy. And by impeccable, I mean tastes similar to your own. I have one such source who is absolutely immersed in the new music scene. Every three months, I learn about the “best of” from her research and buy a few albums from the iTunes store. Personally, I don’t want to add to my collection too much more quickly than this because it takes some time to take in the new music, particularly if you want to listen to some “old” music as well. That’s the problem with getting your music recommendations from a blog…the authors’ tastes may differ from yours and there may be too many recommendations to know which albums to pick or not enough time to absorb all the albums should you heed all the recommendations.

May be a bit late to this thread, but you should check out my site www.musicmobs.com. It's a collaborative filtering powered music social network. Basically it profiles your music, cross references you with similar users, and suggests similar artists for each band. You will most assuredly find new music with it.

I'm encouraged to see all of the responses here!

I recently released an album on my weblog and it is getting great reviews. Please check out: http://www.anotherdreamer.net

Fans of Theivery Corporation, Air, Bjork and Groove Armada might like the music of K.I.A., and/or shinjuku zulu, which is a mix of sophisticated uptempo and downtempo/dub electronica with various vocal styles, from middle eastern chants to jazz scatting to Jamaican haikus.

"Sonorous Susurrus" is the latest release by K.I.A.; tracks 1-11 are uptempo, 12-22 are downtempo. (Hear 'em @ iTunes.)

The releases are well-suited for digital distribution, as each CD has 3-4 tracks that 'fit' into each of the genres: "electronica", "world", "acappella", "dance", "dub" etc.; so say a listener who may only like chillout tracks, or just acapellas, or exclusively Buddha Bar-esque tunes, could download just the ones of that style from any of the releases for their own personal mix.

cheers

ps. if you like the music, pls. spread the word...
