The Internet Axis of Evil (Continued)
As I sit here running SpySweeper on my laptop, I am now adding a third scourge to my Internet Axis of Evil - Adware/Spyware.
So far, I've got 22 different executables on my laptop that are classified as spyware. Ouch!

There are two ways to solve these problems. You can fight them head on with anti-spyware and antivirus programs or you can find a niche where you're more or less protected (sorta like business, huh?) Sometimes, finding niche is the better solution: get a Mac. Even if Unix isn't inherently more secure than Windows (but I think it is), there are practically no viruses and spyware written for the platform.
Spam: well, that's a different issue...

Fred: I use AdAware 6.0 on all my/our machines. This stuff is worse than viruses to my mind because they make the dubious claim that you agreed to download this crap. I've had to disable my kids' ability to install software under their user names on the network and disabled active-x. There really oughta big a law.

I tried to find the article that I read yesterday about American law and spyware. They actually created a task team of sorts to design policy that would outlaw various types of spyware/adware.
The big problem they have is how to define what may or may not be done. Some people are of opinion that it shouldn't be the type of software that has to be banned, but much rather what it does - spying.
That'll put a bit of a dent in homeland security plans. Good ol' US of A.

There's a simple reason why adware and spyware persist: Similar to spam, when enough people click, buyers will keep buying. It doesn't take too many clicks out of hundreds of millions of ads served to keep this practice alive.
The leading Adware products - Claria/Gator/GAIN and WhenU/SaveNow - have attained legitimacy among buyers. They've cleaned up their acts somewhat and are trying to be more relevant (e.g., when I go to JCrew site they pitch me a discount for Banana Republic).
True spyware invades without warning through instant messengers, trial software downloads, Web site accesses, etc. It's hard to see how this stuff will ever be tamed - until people stop falling for the tricky click methods they use to keep performance high.

Fred, I went through this - I used most of the products mentioned above. In the end, I ordered a new laptop and turned my old one in to be completely scrubbed and re-issued to someone else in the company. I could not win the battle.

Spyware? Well, don't download and install whole bunch of crap. It happenned to me at the dawn of my programming career , but now I just don't do it. Yes , I like free soft - who doesn't, but some discretion should be applied. They usually catch people on such seductive stuff as free file downloads like Kazaa, or different kinds of cracked software, that carries the payload inside. Nobody puts spyware in compilers, they put it in media playing software and things like that. Also as far as I know companies like Verizon(puts IPinsight or IPSight - I don't remember) and HP(puts Netropa) put spyware in their legitimate software. In case of Verizon - don't use their DSL dialing software, buy a router (D-link or LinkSys) and it will dial to your DSL for you. On a top of it it may provide you with firewall as well. Do not install "convinience" buttons features on HP keyboards (you know those little buttons that you press and it takes you browser to mail, ebay etc.) because it install keylogger Netropa together with those nice features. It loggs every key stroke and sends it to ... Hewlett Packard. Why? Who knows. It just does. The rule of a thumb (dumb?) if it sounds to good it might be loaded. Literally.

How did you get it off? I have spent countless hours trying to remove this beast! It keeps adding more and more.... Help. I have tried SpySweeper, Adware and Norton. They all identify the Spy but cannot remove or quarantine it. I even went into Regedit and removed it manually. It must have a pretty god evil disguise.

I love spysweeper, however there are some spyware entities that are easily detected by this software, but are not so easily removable. try manual spyware removal instructions at http://www.spywaredb.com , on spyware threats that remain unaffected by this automatic spyware removal tool.
