Blam (continued)

I've gotten lots of comments on my posts on Blam (blog spam/comment spam). After reading all of them, it seems the most successful approach is the image that you have to retype to be able to comment. We've all seen these. They use them at ticketing sites, domain registration sites, etc to get around the bot problem. It seems that this works real well to stop comment spam too.

I've sent an email to TypePad suggesting they add that tool. I'll let you know what I hear back.

I agree that such a tool is the best interim measure in many respects, but SixApart will likely not implement it due to one huge problem with visual word approximations: what happens if the user happens to be unable to see?

Check out Expression Engine (www.pmachine.com), It already has spam, er, BLAM; protection built in.

expression engine is not a hosted service, is it? it is installable software just like MovableType. I think Fred's problem is specific to TypePad. MT has comment spam protection/filtering and rejection available via plugin, too. I use it every day and it blocks TONS of blam.
