Broadcatching (Continued)

To follow up on my post from yesterday on this subject, this RSS + Bit Torrents thing is powerful. I get notified every day of stuff that I can easily and quickly download via Bit Torrents.

It would be nice if I could configure these RSS feeds with keywords so I can create custom feeds that deliver very specific things - Jon Stewart, Wilco shows, Larry David, etc.

The only problem is I'm filling up my hard disk at an alarming rate. I've downloaded two TV shows and four live shows (Wilco Dekalb, Wilco Irving Plaza, Ben Kweller, and Death Cab) and I've used up 3.6GB already. That's 10% of my hard disk.

I guess its time for a new machine or a removable hard disk. The problem with the latter approach is I like to have everything on my laptop because I am on the move so often.

external firewire...

checkout the smartdisk firelite drives... very small, firewire powered up to 80 GB.

Welcome to heavy downloading. I'm up to over 500GB in my music machine, and I only download Dylan shows - there's been over 40 posted so far in 2004! And the only reasonable way to back them up is to buy 120GB drives, put them in the machine for an hour to fill them, then set them on the shelf. Good thing these drives are cheap...

BitTorrent allows for efficient usage of broadband connections; BT+RSS all the more so. I am looking into Nucleus as a way of picking .torrent attachments out of an RSS feed and initiating downloads as I want to do this very much as well.

Regarding filling up hard drives, at a constant 100KB per second over a basic consumer broadband line, my math says that's 250GB per month today downloaded. On the other hand I see Western Digital 250GB drives are going for $180 or so, about the same as a mere nine CDs at in-store retail prices.

DVD Burner.

I think they're under 100$ USD now.

Don't know what RSS reader you're using, but FeedDemon (like a number of others) offers the ability to set up "watch" feeds, that are essentially keyword filters applied to all of your subscribed feeds.

I love the feature -- I have watch feeds set up to keep an eye out for specific companies and technologies, the words "good restaurant"...all sorts of good stuff... :)
