Modest Mouse
My friend Steve's friend Mark made a CD mix that had a song called Float On from Modest Mouse on it. I loved that song the instant i heard it. It was the only song on the Mixed CD that really stuck with me.
So I finally got around to listening to Modest Mouse on Rhapsody today. Wow. These guys are great. I have to go out and get their new album.

I heartily recommend "This Is A Long Drive For Somebody With Nothing To Think About...", Modest Mouse's first album. This is a classic of my younger days and shockingly great when one considers they were all probably about 18 when they made it. Not sure if they have it on iTunes or not, but my vinyl copy is beautiful in a physical sense: very lush and artistic packaging.
Also, if you get a chance, you should see this band. I haven't seen them since 1997, but back then, they were quite engrossing as performers and I'm assuming that is still the case.

Oh, I hit send before I finished...
Anyway, if you do go see them, a word of warning: the singer is a prick. I like that in rock stars sometimes. Malkmus tried to pull it off for a while but he's just too nice at heart, but Monsieur Brock is a class A prima donna. Personally, that doesn't turn me off because I think of musicians a lot like athletes: they are not really necessarily supposed to be role models. And really, what good is a true rock star if there isn't a hint of menace or bad socialization.
Specifically, I remember one Modest Mouse show I went to after their second album came out. During the breaks between songs, some guy in the rather sparse audience was yelling requests for songs from their first album. After repeatedly saying"We don't do fucking request!" , the singer stopped the show for a moment to seek out the request-shouter.
"Hey, who was it that wanted to hear that?" he said, shielding his eyes from the spotlight so he could see into the crowd.
"You? Was it you?" He pointed to some indy kid about halfway back in the room.
"You?" The guy nodded.
The singer inhaled all the way, and expeled the loudest, most ear-piercing, speaker shredding yell I've ever heard in my life:
"FUUUUCK YOU!"

When I heard a song called "Float On" was out...I thought it was a remake of the old 1970s song by The Floaters....
"larry, aquarius, I love everything and everybody...."
