Gmail
My friend Seth Goldstein asked me at breakfast last week if I had signed up for Gmail. Seth and a few other friends have invited me to join Gmail but I haven't done it.
I told Seth that I have a Yahoo! and an AOL email account and don't use either of them so I wasn't in a hurry to add another webmail account that I don't use.
He then said something interesting. He forwards all his mail to Gmail. Whenever he wants to find something, he just goes to Gmail and searches for it. It's fast, its easy, and its all there.
Hmm. Looks like I'm going to get a Gmail account now and give that a try. I am sick and tired of the terrible search in Outlook. I'll have to use Outlook when I'm offline, but when I'm online, I'll give Gmail a shot.

Here's a good idea. I wonder when they are going to integrate Gmail into Google toolbar. Blogger's already there... Google is coming to desktop through Microsoft's own software :-) [Read More]

Anything to avoid Outlook, in fact I'd say Outlook is the #2 reason I stick with Mac. Number 1 is the cool colors.

I like the idea of GMail as a searchable archive, but if you need fast search in Outlook, try the Lookout addin (http://www.lookoutsoft.com/Lookout/).

You might wanna take a look at Apple's "Spotlight" technology in Tiger ... of course that's a year from now for consumers. While it's not insanely relevant to you if you don't use a Mac (But if i remember correctly, your household is pretty Appled), it's still interesting food for thought.
Also keep in mind that GMail allows you to create simple and complex rules for filters, which allow you to assign various "tags" to your emails. You can use those tags as selectors for various folders. Pretty powerful when combined with its fast search ability.

Someone needs to write Terry Semel an open letter. Something like this....
Dear Mr. Semel:
First, your links to AutoComplete and Prefill Address Book don't seem to be working (ever!).
Secondly, hasn't it been proven enough that communications and messaging is the killer app on the web???? If so, why do a have a low functional email solution with Yahoo?
1) I have Messenger, when a new email comes, why can't a quickly push one button to delete, or place it in a folder, if I know its something I don't want? Instead of eventually going to my Inbox and deleting (how many clicks?).
2) Why not offer a premium service like MSN to synch Outlook and my Yahoo? More than POP3 forwarding.
3) Or even host Exchange for small businesses. Include a license to Blackberry for $20/month and you'd have lots of business (ie, USA.net).
4) Do you think your Business email service is competitive with only 25Mb of storage? The benefit of my own domain name isn't enough.
5) Here's one - automated forwarding of email to any SMS address, with spam filtering included (or small fee/mo). How long does it take someone to log into the web, then Yahoo mail, to check your mail on the road. Couldn't you disrupt RIMM via the lower per month charges ($9/mo) for SMS service even with the poor input device of a mobile phone? BTW, that hurdle seems to be going down anyway.
Bottom line, why not a more robust tool that makes managing messages and email easy, rather than requiring more page views to drive advertising revenue????? Hhhmmm, I wonder what Google is doing to address users' needs?

BTW, answer to #1 above is 4 clicks. But even more annoying is the time. Even on a T1, Yahoo pages take too long to load. Let me get on with my multitasking.

I second the recommnedation of Lookout - best search plugin ever (and free for now). I'm a happy user and had tried everything for Windows/Outlook search.

Gmail is great for searching and organizing e-mails, but I find that I don't use webmail much either.
For making Outlook more usable, with infinitely better search and organization capabilities, I recommend NEO - the Nelson E-mail Organizer. www.emailorganizer.com

Fred, good luck getting your email OUT of Gmail once it's in there. You should check out Stata Labs' Bloomba email program. It's an MS Outlook replacement.

Outlook's built-in search is indeed terrible...However, there is an incredible add-on for outlook called "lookout" from www.lookoutsoft.com
It is incredibly fast, what takes outlook 10 minutes (literally!) takes lookout less then a few seconds. Check it out. I am not affiliated in anyway with the company, btw.
