Cost Per Lead
John Batelle has a great chart of the cost per lead of various direct marketing methods. It comes from Safa Rashtchy.
What is amazing to me about the chart is not that paid search is the lowest cost direct marketing medium, we all know that. It's that email is right behind and almost as cost effective. If that's the case, why is paid search growing so much faster than email?

Numbers don't include impact on brand franchise, which may be extremely negative in case of email.
Good reason to get third parties like Techbargains (or those wacky Norton spam artists) to do it for you.

Does anybody know of a good source for CPL estimates/ranges by industry. Specifically looking for a CPL range for a large financial market that is looking to drive leads for their training classes?
Any input would be appreciated.

Hi ,
I am writing a report about lead generation in Australia, and wanted to know if I can read your report on Cost per lead.
Perhaps the scope of the Industry in US can help me evaluate the Australian market, and comparison of cost per lead in various media: TV, Radio, Direct Mail, Internet.
Thank you kindly,
Gad Levy

These costs are for delivering a message, not for acquiring a lead. I'm amazed how this inaccuracy keeps getting perpetuated as if it were fact.
