Firefox (continued)

Now I am getting obsessed.

This is an open source product and I want them to change something. Tabbed browsing is awesome. But why, when I click on a link when I am in Firefox, does the broswer open up a second browser instead of just opening up a new tab?

Do I need to configure it to do that?

I don't use IE, I haven't for over a year. I split my time between Safari and Firefox, with the bulk of my time in Firefox on MacOSX. Don't get me wrong, but tabbed browsing is missing something, either that... [Read More]

Firefox can be customized by adding extensions.
Add the Extension "Single Window" for this feature. Tools->Extensions->Get More Extensions and then look under tabbed browsing, or go directly
https://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=50&vid=673
To get this to work for all links that open new windows Tools->Extensions-> Double-click on Single Window and check the "Open JavaScript links in new window" box.

Another great extension is "Super DragAndGo" allowing you to drag a link anywhere on a page to open it in a new tab.

I use Single Window too, but if you are REALLY obsessive about it Tabbrowser Preferences is probably better. You should checkout the extensions website.
I install the following extensions:
SessionSaver
SpellBound
Show Failed URL
WeatherFox
User Agent Switcher
miniT (Lets you drag tabs around, i.e. rearrange them)
Downlaod Statusbar
and a few others.
Google for sessionsaver if you want it, it saves all your open tabs, but be careful and make sure that the last Firefox window you have open is the one you want saved or use File > Exit
You can get the Show Failed URL extension on my website, I have a direct download for it and a link to the site I got it from.

No Firefox install is complete w/out a mouse gesture install (IMO of course). Check out Mouse Gestures

I also am a happy extensions user...but to configure vanilla Firefox to open up a link in a tab instead of a window, go to Options>General>Tab Options. Select the Links Tab. There you can configure the behavior for external or internal links: new window, new tab, current tab...

Mike: I think you have an extension installed for those options. Plain install doesn't include those options.

And for those into mouse gestures, check out Stroke-it. It'll allow you to do gestures for any application, not just your browser. Indispensable in my opinion.

Fred,
This is a feature of Firfoex that irked me also.
If you are using Firefox 1.0 (I believe it is the latest available version) just go to Tools --> Options --> Advanced --> Browsing. In the Browsing section you can change the settings to open links in new tabs and not new windows.

Fred,

Tabbed Browsing is the feature that makes everyone switched including myself way back using Netcaptor(add-on to IE).

While you are at it, if you aint on Dual monitors or more, do so. I bet your current video probably supports it already, if not just buy an old Matrox PCI card.

There is nothing like browsing on 1 monitor and having Word/Powerpoint/Programming and what not on the other.

I tried it out a few years back while looking at some of my programming friends and have not looked back since. Productivity goes way up as does ease of usage.

One downside is that it makes it all the more painful when it comes to upgrading, as you tend to buy monitors in a pair and of course "increased radiation".

Check out http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/ for their gallery + database (of cards to use in combination)

I don't get this. What is so special with Firefox, I downloaded it yesterday and the tab feature from switching between different windows is something I was already using in IE, as well multiwindow browsing was already common when I was opening new window by pressing shift while clicking the link.
So please tell me, I don't get what this buzz is all about.
Thanks,
Chris

Easier still: will open a new tab... no need for any extension on this.

Firefox is way less susceptible to viri and other malware. That alone is reason enough for me to use it. By using Firefox and a shareware clone of Outlook I inoculate myself from many (if not most) of the viri and trojans, since the majority of those things are written to exploit weaknesses in IE or Outlook.

That said, extensions rock! Bug Me Not and ieview are two others I really like that haven't been mentioned above.

Posted by: Chris | Oct 7, 2004 8:48:06 AM

Assuming you have a 3 button mouse, just use the middle button to select the link and it will open in a new tab.

The solutions in the comments were great. I finally have a way to migrate off Avant Browser on IE to Firefox.

Posted by: Waqas Ahmed | Oct 8, 2004 8:51:28 PM

This is now built in to 1.0-rc1
Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Tabbed Browsing
has the options you're looking for.
