The Morning After

I often say "I'll sleep on it". I believe my best work is often done while I sleep. I wake up with answers all the time.

And so I slept on the debate and woke up feeling even better about what John Kerry did last night. I think he rebuffed the notion that he's weak and can't be trusted to be President, which has been the message that the Bush Administration has been hammering home.

Bush has managed to turn this election from a referendum on his presidency (in which he was losing) to a referendum on a picture of John Kerry that he was painting (one he was winning). I think Kerry changed a bunch of people's views of him last night; not the right wingers, they'll be uncomfortable with Kerry no matter what. But there are a lot of independant voters who'd like to get Bush out of office but won't elect someone who will put the country in more danger (the central assertion of Bush's campaign against Kerry). Kerry comforted and surprised a lot of those people last night. That's what Kerry did for himself.

Bush hurt himself. Josh Micha Marshall has it right when he said that Bush doesn't like to be criticized. After all he's right, he's strong, and just let him do what he knows is best. Bush came across as a deer stuck in the headlights last night. An angry deer because Kerry was criticizing him.

We'll see how this plays out in the days ahead. Bush still has lots of advantages, but the debate should change the dynamic in the race for those who are trying to make up their mind.

This is the first debate out of three. Bush is known to suck on the first try, and get it right on the third.

That’s what I’m worried about. If on the 3rd debate (The only real one that counts, the one that people will remember), he’ll get everything right.

Not right enough for the democrats to switch sides, but for middle America to say “He’s good enough, we’ll pick him.”

I’m a liberal Canadian, so I cannot stand bush. But, it’s unfortunate to hear west coast Americans (not you fred heh heh)thinking bush is going to go down easy. They point to all the dumb mistakes he has made, the Michael Moore film, bad press, etc.

The west coast seems to forget about the huge center of America, which has had strong support for bush. They think much more differently then the east and west coasts. That’s what I’m worried about.

"The "debate" was nothing more than a well rehearsed rehash of each candidates position on the war. I watched and don't regret it, but it was the epitome of predictability. It won't change anybody's mind. Unless one or the other makes some huge gaff in the next two (nobody will watch the other two since this is a one issue election), we will go into Nov neck and neck.

Bush in a squeaker."

Other than that, the Kerry folks liked what their guy said, and the Bushies likewise. A necessary campaign exercise, but in this election, irrelevant. Sorry should have said that in lieu of earlier comment, but I've been up all night in the studio and my boss was due into the office from out of town any minute. Besides, you ought to know I don't bash anyone, especially your bro.
