Old Habits Die Hard

We were listening to satellite radio this morning and a song came on that I'd heard a few times in the past week.  It was a duet between Mick Jagger and Sheryl Crow.  I looked up the song, artist, title info and the song name was Old Habits Die Hard and its on the Alfie sound track.

Jessica told me that Joss Stone sings a song with Mick Jagger on the sound track and I figured that can't be all bad, so I downloaded the record on iTunes and loaded it onto my iPod.

It was a moment of temporary insantity.  Because Mick Jagger hasn't done anything good since Some Girls in 1979, 25 years ago, the year I graduated from high school.  But old habits die hard.

This record, a collaboration with Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, is  particularly bad.  Mick is just pathetic, singing bad ballads with insipid lyrics that make me want to puke.

Can this really be the same guy who sang Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed, Stray Cat Blues, and Salt of the Earth?  It must be an imposter.  I can't deal with any other explanation.

As for Joss Stone, she's forced to do a sappy rendition of What's It All About Alfie which won't do much for her blossoming career.  But there is one highlight on an otherwise miserable record.

Joss Stone and Nadirah "Nadz" do a duet called Wicked Time that reminds me of the Fugees or Lauryn Hill's solo record.  And Mick does some backing vocals on this track that are the only redeeming contribution to an otherwise sickening effort on his behalf.

Always enjoy your music recommendations and would like to offer a couple I think you might enjoy and that I don't think you've mentioned here: The Thrills (especially Too Late for the City) and Los Lonely Boys. The Thrills are an Irish group that thinks they're the Beach Boys. It's an amazing sound and the songs are beautifully crafted. Los Lonely Boys' blend of Tejano, blues and rock includes harmonies that only brothers could produce (think Everly Bros).

Re The Stones . . . definitely agree they are long in the tooth, but can't agree that they've done nothing good since 1979. I grew up with the Beatles vs Stones debate and never could pick one over the other. Saw the Stones at MSG in 71 & 72 (with Ike & Tina Turner opening both times). Exile on Main Street (72) is one of my all time faves, along with Beatles' Revolver and Kinks' Arthur.

Though I haven't seen them live since, and agree that their records haven't been particularly memorable since Some Girls, I was blown away by their televised concert last year. Keith is still the best rhythm guitarist on the rock planet and Mick still rocks.

Haven't heard this Mick effort and may just add it to the pile of non-Stones MJ projects that I will never listen to if I can help it. I have never heard, or don't recall, anything from his two solo records other than the insipid "Just Another Night" and only because it was on heavy rotation on MTV back in the mid eighties.

My philosophy is to purposefully avoid any and all MJ non-Stones efforts for the vary reason you blog about, unless someone with Stones authority (aka Jackson) recommends it, or if I hear something by pure accident. Forced ignorant bliss if you will.

Having said that, your claim that Mick has done nothing worthy since “Some Girls” is, in the words of noted attorney Jackie Childs, preposterous. Check “Voodoo Lounge”. Their hit “Love is Strong” is a great Jagger vocal as are many others on that album. Even the sub par Stones records offer other great Jagger moments i.e. “One Hit To the Body” from “Dirty Work” “Ain’t No Use In Cryin” from “Tattoo You” is another example. Although there are no end to end works that have emerged from the Stones since “Some Girls”, there are countless diamonds in the rough since that records release. Maybe Jackson and I can compile a post “Some Girls” collection for you so you don’t have to slog through all the albums.

His non-Stones work is far less accomplished, but I dare you to listen to his rendition of the Irish traditional “Long Black Veil” from the Chieftains record of the same title. Simply brilliant. Other than that, I can’t really cite anything remotely listenable. The guy somehow still manages to convince himself that he can compete with the contemporary pop artists of today. I think he does nothing but put his dignity at risk. Keith hates these forays into non-Stones pop, as do I.

Tony is right, although it seems everything (except the Cheiftans thing) he does without Keith is awful, there are many notable tracks since '78. 'Worried About You' comes to mind. Hell, all of 'Tatoo You' is good. We'll have to make you that CD.

Fred, I disagree - "Old Habits Die Hard" is a great tune! Granted it may not have the most complex message, but the quality of MJ's voice combined with Sheryl Crow is more than worth the $0.99 on Itunes. However I do agree with your DISappointment over Rice's appointment. I am a Bush supporter and felt he could have chosen a candidate with a more aggressive agenda in the middle east. In his first admin. Bush was smart enough to surround himself with people who were better than him. I only hope he hasn't forgotten that lesson.

Some Girls was 1978. And you forgot Tatoo You, from 1981. It is the real deal, still sounds good today. Not to get overly nostalgic, but we actually listened to it for the first time together in the Beta house. I must agree, everthing since then basically sucks. They do still rock live though.

Wow, Bob chimes in with memories of the Beta house. I was there (Boston) that summer (81) when the Stones were hitting the road in support of Tatoo You, you seemed to like it then Fred. I hadn't been converted yet and was amped about the new Scorpions record (Animal Magnetism).

I have read all the comments regarding Mick Jagger and the Stones. It is obvious your authors haven't a clue.
All I hear is "the last time they had a good album was in 1977; notably Some Girls". Get a grip. Tatoo You was over the top, Dirty Work was very well done, Emotional Rescue was and still is in a class by itself. Love is Strong and Flip the Switch only proves this is the best rock band on the planet. So, my final comment to you all is: "You're gonna get it straight from the shoulder, can't you see the party's over?" (Let Me Go)
