Aging Punk Rockers

Byrne Aging punk rockers is clearly the theme of the day

I stopped by the Apple store in Soho on the way back from a meeting today.  If you haven't been to this store, it is disneyland for a guy like me.

I had to get some accessories for my iPod.  I got in line to check out and David Byrne is in line in front of me, buying essentially the same stuff I am buying plus some blank CDs so he can rip, mix, burn.

Beside the fact that David Byrne is one of the coolest people alive, and a great musician, and in his day one of the best punk rockers ever, he's a real person, who stands in line, carries a back pack, and buys his own stuff, and is a member of the iPod generation.

I thought for a second about snapping a picture, but decided that I don't want to be part of the snapperazi, one of the few digital trends that I don't particularly like.

That was a nice moment in an otherwise hectic day.

"he's a real person, who stands in line, carries a back pack, and buys his own stuff, and is a member of the iPod generation." Best AVC Quote ever.

I saw him drinking a pinacolada at Trader Vic's, his hair was perfect...

Before I saw Byrne play at Irving Plaza a few years ago, I caught him riding his bike home from the venue after soundcheck -- must be nice to be "on tour" but still have dinner at home with the kids....

Punk rocker? I don't think so.

I saw him a coupla months ago in Times Sq, he was walking huddled in a grey drizzle with a young chick; I couldn't figure out if it was his daughter or his girlfriend.

But you know, seeing rockers in NY is like seeing superheros in NY if you're living in an old Marvel comic. It just happens. I remember years ago getting off the 1 train at 76th street and Lou Reed rushing past me, muttering "Fuck...fuck..." to himself just like YOU would if you missed the downtown local you were hoping to catch.

Brushed with greatness moments are a hazzard of living in NYC. David Johansen buying coffee in a deli on 57th, that voice, "coffe black" was all it took to turn my head, I froze, and had a persanality crisis of my own.
