Firefox Market Share
OM Malik's post on Firefox' growing market share (now at 5% of all Internet users) led me to look at my blog's browser market share.
Back in November, I posted a pie chart that showed that 28% of my readers use Firefox and 57% use Internet Explorer. That was such an eye opener to me.
It's interesting that in the two months since, the numbers haven't changed very much. Here is the chart as of today:
The percentage of Firefox users has actually declined a tad, from 28% to 26%, and IE has gone up from 57% to 63%.
I suspect that's due to the broadening of my reader base more than IE taking back share from Firefox.
OM's reader base is probably more techy than mine and Firefox represents 23% of his users.
No matter how you cut it, Firefox has a large user base among the tech community and a growing base among the Internet users at large.
And it matters because I still find sites that don't work well with Firefox. That needs to be addressed by the owners of those sites.

I haven't come across any sites yet that conflict with Firefox.
My theory on firefox users, is that the younger the computer user, the more likely they will use Firefox. It takes some experimenting with windows and Microsoft products in general to find out how you can get screwed over with their product and decide to change. Most older users won't experiment to this level or will resign themselves to the "that's the way it is" attitude.
that's just my idea. I see it at work everyday in an office enviroment. People complain about pop ups, having to have so many browsers open at the same time. When i mention there are other alternatives, they just nod in acknowledgement, but don't dare try something new. The only users of Firefox in my company are myself and the IT department.

It's also important to note that the basic SiteMeter stats are just for your last 100 visitors. I just clicked on your sitemeter and FireFox is 35% right now.

We're number three, we're number three! At 7% Safari ain't king, but I like it.

FWIW - I've run across sites of people I know that have problems with Firefox. Some of the sites were created using Microsoft Publisher.

The 7% figure for Safari caught my eye. But then look at OS share:
Macintosh OS 10: 8%
Macintosh OS 9: 3%
Not too shabby for the 2% (sales) platform!

I just switched in the last week to Firefox after using Mozilla for a few months. Are they counted the same in your stats because I'm sure a lot of of people will follow the same migration from IE to Mozilla to Firefox.
Even while using Mozilla, I wasn't sure what Firefox was until introduced by a friend.

Why should site owners have to fix incompatibilities with Firefox? If a company enters the market with a new browser, the burden is the publisher to make it compatible with the web that now exists. It's idiotic to say "We have this new browser but you have to modify your sites so it will make". This is particularly true since the web was essentially built with Microsoft tools and there are no Firefox publishing tools.

Bryan, the problem is that Internet Explorer does not respect the official W3 html-standards. Because of IE's market share, this has allowed the owners of websites to neglect compatibility with the official standards, but Firefox's - which does respect the standards - increasing popularity makes it imperative that all site-owners clean up their dirty code.

I really like Firefox and it is good to know that the MarketShare has been continually growing.
I had a question: 5% marketshare of which community?
We have an OnDemand product that supports IE and Netscape and we are looking at certifying it for FireFox as well, I would like to know the ROI by certifying my product on FireFox. We primarily deal with Resellers / End Customers. Thx
