My Bloody Valentine

Loveless When I went back over the numerous comments to my Favorite 50 posts, I didn't find many discs that I hadn't heard before.

But one disc was mentioned three or four times, and I had never heard it.

It's a disc called Loveless by a band called My Bloody Valentine.

So I bought it at Amazon.  It came this week and I loaded it onto my digital music system and my iPod.

I am listening to Loveless for the first time as I write this.

It's a great record.  It sounds a bit like a mix of Gang of Four and Radiohead if you want something to compare it to.

I don't know if it can get enough listens over the next year to make it onto my Top 50 list, but I am sure glad I got this album.  I intend to give it some serious airtime.

I started reading several VC blogs a few months back for 2 reasons.

1) I had just been through the process of raising money with my previous company.
2) I wanted to get a better sense of what emerging technologies/spaces VC's were interested in right now.

Although I thoroughly enjoy the business related posts on a number of VC blogs, this one is my favorite because of the posts that have nothing to do with venture captical, technology, or business. The books, music, insights into life, and stories about family really add a human element.

It also turns out that we have similar musical tastes. I posted a few days back on The Stone Roses. "Loveless" is another excellent album although I might not place it in my Top 50 anymore. Maybe I'm getting too old to listen to it as much. But back in '91 seeing them live with Babes in Toyland opening was pretty amazing. Great music now but groundbreaking at the time.

Fred,

What "digital music system" are you referring to? I know you live in a house in t he Village -- as do I -- and I'd love to know what you installed. I'm looking at: www.netstreams.com. I wired the house for it and am testing one zone now. Still, I'd love to know about alternatives.

I originally was researching Tribe.Net's revenue model (ditto on Craig's List), and happened to run across your blog. I'm an entrepreneur currently 'working for the man', as I recoup from my past few ventures that were valuable important lessons, but financially *really hurt*. I'm young with no wife, kids, or mortgage payments, so the risks were at a good time in my life. I'm now working on another venture that would compete with Tribe.Net/Craig's List, but I think both companies have great sites and growth.

Anyhow, aside from the world of VC intriguing me (since the dot-com days), I'm addicted to music. I notice you have a wide variety of tastes, which I also have, so thought I'd let you know what I just started listening to -- The Game. Read the article on VH1.com, http://www.vh1.com/news/articles/1495543/20050110/game.jhtml?headlines=true&_requestid=180265. This album has a line-up like the NY Yankees. He's signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent as executive producers, production by Dr. Dre, Eminem, Timbaland, Kanye West, Just Blaze, and others. Guest appearances by Eminem, 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes, Mary J. Blige, Floetry, and more. The album sounds great as well (look for it Tuesday). The new 2Pac album is also a stand-out, after a few listens. Most of the production is by Eminem -- a stand-out "get pumped" track is song 16 "A Crooked N**** Too". Whether 2Pac is still alive or not, the debate will continue...

On a whole other side of things, I'm addicted to a band in the UK -- actually, I think it is just an artist. The band is Aqualung (the singer is Matt Hale). http://www.aqualung.net/. Think Coldplay, and think their success. Aqualung could easily garner this kind of success in my opinion. There are 3 tracks available on their website once you sign-up and login to their site. They have a track on the Wicker Park soundtrack, which is how I heard of them -- that soundtrack by the way is just as incredible as the Garden State soundtrack. There are 2 Aqualung albums -- once you hear either, you will instantly know it is incredible. The *problem* is that they aren't being distributed by any label in the USA, you have to purchase as an import or from the UK. You're looking at about $15 used for the one album and $23 used for the other. Regardless, money *very well spent*. Being a VC, I know this isn't an area of expertise probably, but I'd invested in a USA distribution deal ;) I believe you are in NY, they are performing at Joe's Pub on Feb 2nd -- let me say I'm jealous.

Just to give some other musical interests of mine: Bruce Springsteen (the most incredible live performer ever), Eminem, System of a Down, Linkin Park, The Used, Frou Frou, Teitur, John Mayer, Something for Kate (australian), Pete Murray (australian), The Killers, Ambulance LTD, Pilate, Radiohead, Alter Bridge, Chevelle, 30 Seconds To Mars (the most underrated rock album ever), Ani Difranco, and the list goes on and on and on.

also a huge fan of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless album!
