Regarding the dropdown box - just type the first letter of the country or state you belong to, and the selection will jump to it.

Also regarding the dropdown box...
If you continue to type the first letter it will alphabetically scroll through the states that begin with that letter. So for New York, 6 'n' keystrokes if the states are spelled out and 8 keystrokes if the states are abbreviated.
