Anything Is Possible

How many times did you want to be a DJ?

Now you can podcast.

How many times did you want to be a movie maker?

Now you can Vimeo.

How many times did you want to be a rock star?

Now you can garageband.

How many times did you want to write music for TV shows?

Now you can Freeplay.

How many times did you want to be a journalist?

Now you can blog.

Anything is possible in this world we are living in.

It's an incredible time with the barriers to entry coming down for so many things.

The revolution of the ants is upon us.

Enjoy it.

Perfect post!

But why did you want to do those things?

You may as well DJ in your bedroom for your little sister as podcast. You might as well write a diary as blog (for the vast majority of unread blogs out there).

Talented DJs, bands, writers etc. have always had a route to market - and the fact that it took some graft and balls to get an audience (in the local bar, paper, etc.) acted as a great first line filter.

I love this and it's so true! And it's happening so fast, it literally takes my breath away. Wheeee!

Great post!

I agree, partly.
It's surely easier to make stuff (music, video etc.), and to propose it to the world. What it lacks, usually, it's an audience.

How are you going to be found, and get a sizeable audience? That's the real challenge...

I'm a DJ (for hobby), and what I really like is exposing people to music, and see them dance and go crazy... podcasting to a dozen people doesn't seem like it. I know that probably a few people will emerge from that scene and go to bigger things, but we didn't see much of that with Internet radio, and I doubt that we'll see it now.

All this stuff is great for developing a sense of style, developing a sense of who you are as a writer, DJ, filmaker, or musician, but in the end you need to make a leap, to expand beyond the 'livingroom' as it was put. Bands still need to get on a stage, writers need to get their work in stores, filmakers need theaters. It might actually be harder to get noticed in such a overexpanded market.
It is fun though.

I think the key phrase to Fred's post is "want to be". If you want to be something you can. It doesn't mean that you'll become a professional, but there is basically unlimited room for people that want to get involved with creative hobbies.

As these technologies mature, it will be easier and easier for people to express themselves creatively. That should have the trickle up(?) effect of producing more professionals as people that would have not previously discovered their talent do. It should also produce a more knowledgeable customer/fan base as more people find out how hard it really is to make art. The net result - better art for everyone! The one key is going to be powerful search and filtering so that you can find what you like in the huge sea of options.

I think the last few posts have missed the point. A vast majority of the infrastructure necessary to support this "democracy in media" trend is very immature. This is a long-term trend, not something that will yield substantial results in 12 or even 48 months. (It reminds me a bit of 1999 Internet hype. It was right, just a little too optimistic when it came to time frame.)

And even when the technology infrastructure is really in place (sorry, Netflix recommendations still actually suck), it will take a long time for people to change their habits when it comes to locating and viewing media. These habits have been born out of decades of practice and will probably take another decade or so to change. (I mean how long has TiVo been around and how many people are actually using PVRs today, 8 million?)

Have patience. As time progresses a whole new generation of content creators will grow up without knowing the inherent bottlenecks of today's media supply chain. As the content starts to fill the networks, it will draw more and more consumers in. (The value proposition for most consumers needs to be obvious and enormous to break old habits.) As more consumers begin to migrate a virtuous cycle of production and consumption will kick into high gear. Sure, lots of this stuff (probably most) will never find an audience larger than the casual passerby, but there will be a world of stuff that a few hundred or a few thousand find really interesting and engaging. This is the power of the long tail.

It’ll happen, just give it some time.
