Audio, Video, and Links

As we move from text (blogging) to audio (podcasts) and video (streaming video), we are missing what Jeff Jarvis calls "link love".

Links are the currency and the lubrication of the online world.  They are huge.

And they are missing from audio and video content today.

I love my podcasts, but generally really want to link to a very specific part of the podcast (5:33 into it when the joke is told or the song is played).  And I can't do that.  And it's incredibly frustrating.

Great observation. I am relatively new to podcasts and until now have been trying to pinpoint my frustration with them. I think this is it. What makes blogs great is that they allow asynchronous, flexible communication between a lot of different people. It's a two-way street. Podcasts, on the other hand, are not interactive or flexible, and they are a one-way dialogue for the most part. Why isn't there a podcast search tool where I can type "The Shins" and it will search the actual voices in all the podcasts and bring me up a list of links podcast clips that talk about "The Shins."? Maybe these tools are out there already, but in my limited experience I haven't seen them...

When you download a podcast to your iPod, the links do not matter. It is the audio blog that needs the link.

Fred meet Jon Udell.

Many months ago, Jon was all over this topic, with lots of experiments in his blog. I don't recall his conclusions...

Frankly I don't get the Podcasting thing because reading is so much more efficent than audio or video. But to each, their own.
