Complete Fucking Asshole
Hugh McLeod cracks me up daily on his gapingvoid blog.
I've finally decided that its cool to pilfer some of his work and put it on my blog.
So that said, here is Hugh's venn diagram of the complete fucking asshole. We all know at least one of them.
If its not cool, Hugh will let me know.
But I think it is.

Your analog analog if is still very accurate I believe. I think you just didn't take it far enough. The analog for Yahoo and other portals is CBS/ABC/NBC (the portals to the big world of entertainment). Yahoo/MSN/Google are the windows to the big category of all useful information. And the market for useful information is likely to be just as big if not bigger than the windows to entertainment. Another useful but limited comparison would be a giant Yellow Pages but with almost infinite number of pages. The telco Yellow Pages are a very profitable business which in another era were big growers. But since distance is not relevant on the Web, its a consolidated Yellow Pages.
The analog to EBAY is the big market of flea markets/auctions and Pennysaver sales. Each of those businesses are small because they are geographically spread out, but again since distance is not relevant on the Web, EBAY is a huge consolidated flea market/auctions player.

The analog for Geocities is a consolidation of all the small regional publications that towns put out. The ones that publish about the local high school band and the local sports teams.
