Luna's Last Show

I missed it but Jackson was there and blogged it.

Chromewaves also has a good piece on the end of Luna, one of the great Velvet Underground inspired alternative rock bands.

I never saw them live and I guess I never will.

I think we can leave the velvet underground influence back in the earlier 90's. Luna, the sound and experience brought many together, left others behind, told the story of new york, love, addiction, out all night at times "chasing girlies"...As a fan, from my college days of the early 1990's, leaving grunge behind, Luna is and always will be an innovative contribution to music --- and contributor-- to many who found them. Sunday and Monday night will not be forgotten....classic. much thanks, sean, lee, stanley, justin, britta and dean.

I was at the penultimate show as well, and I can't say it went without a requisite amount of heartache. They are a grand exception in the annals of music (indie or not) for having gone out on top, and amicably to boot. One of the best things I read about them came, from all things, a blog:

"Fighting the post-grunge nightmare that ensued in the second half of the 90’s with songs that have a sense of serene space and allow the listener escape is far more valuable than playing the 'who’s more depressed?' game of oneupsmanship that drove the songwriting of other notable independents of the time."

Their setlists from the last two nights, for anyone interested, are an excellent snapshot of the band and their music. Although their live performances will be in most fans' minds long after the fact, their music -- its timelesness -- will stand.

Here's a discreet sample of what y'all missed:

I missed Luna's last - I may hate myself forever for not making more of an effort.

There's a fans blog about last weekend here - Luna's Last Waltz

I'm glad I saw the show, and they were good, but I think I'm missing something. I think Luna is/was a touchstone to something I just wasn't getting. I like the singles though....
