Technorati - What's Up With This?

I visit Technorati every day to see who is linking to me.

It's an incredibly valuable service and I really couldn't blog without it.

But there are some things about it that make me shake my head.

For example, every day I get about 5-15 new links.  I can see them at the top of the technorati results list for avc.blogs.com.

But there's also this number at the top of the results that says "368 links from 254 sources".  Well for some reason Technorati has been reporting that number for my blog for the past three or four months.  It is always the same number.

Now if I get 5-15 new links per day, how is it that I always have 368 links from 254 sources?

And then there's the problem with my own posts showing up.  There are always posts I did on the first page.  Why is that?

Maybe I have configured Technorati incorrectly.  If so, I'd love to know how to fix these two problems.

It is not just you. We are a new blog, opened the doors this past week. Technorati updated for the first two day and has since stopped. We are stuck at 18 links from 17 sources, when I know from looking at it, that we have been linked about 50 times.
just wanted to let you know that it was a system problem, not one specific to you.

Also, I have enjoyed you blog over the past year immensely. It brings me back to my days living in the City a little north of you. I had the opportunity to live in Peter Cooper, and spent much of my time in the same haunts as you write about.

Fred, I've found that clicking on the "rank by Authority" link gives me a more up-to-date count.

That is, if you can get it to give you a count. Typically it fails 5-10 times for me before it works.

Technorati is a frustrating thing. The concept is great, and it could be immensely useful, but it just doesn't work right.

Why not create Technorati and PubSub RSS feeds for your site and just add them to your news aggregator? That why you don't have to visit Technorati at all and only the new links come in... all automatically.

I have the same problem.

Fred,

Thanks for the great feedback, and I'm sorry that we're not meeting your expectations. The link count issue is one that we're working on; as the number of new blogs in the blogosphere is exploding and the number of posts we're tracking is exploding, our ability to keep absolutely accurate link counts has become problematic. We decided to focus entirely on making sure that we show you every new link and mention of you or your blog in your cosmos, even if it meant that the link counts got somewhat inaccurate, as a short-term stopgap.

We're working diligently on fixing the count issue, and I appreciate your patience with us while we get things fixed...

Dave
