It's The Feed Stupid (continued)

Almost a year ago, I wrote the orginal It's The Feed Stupid post.

Since then I've seen ever more evidence that the bigger audience for blogs is via RSS instead of the web.  But it's always been anecdotal until this week.

Early this week the Feedburner guys gave me a preview look at their Total Stats Pro offering.  They've always offered the best RSS stats reporting and its been a big reason why I run a Feedburner feed in the first place.  But now, they are preparing a premium offering which takes it to a new level.  They don't have the pricing worked out yet and it won't be broadly available for another week or two.

I also turned on Feedburner's Overture service this week.  It allows you to run contextual ads from Overture in your RSS feed.  If you subscribe to my Feedburner feed, you are seeing those ads in my feed now instead of the old Amazon ads.

I can tell you this. If you run AdSense on your blog, you should sign up for Feedburner and get the Overture ads.  Also, if you care about your traffic on your blog, you should sign up for Feeburner and get the Total Stats Pro package when they make it available in the next couple weeks.

Here's why.

  • The past three days, my web pageviews were 2650, 2700, and 2100.  On those days the RSS views on my Feedburner feed were 2500, 2550, and 1800.  But my Feedburner feed is only used by 30% of my 3200 RSS subscribers.  If you assume that the views are the same across all three of my feeds, my RSS views are three times my web page views.
  • The past three days, my Adsense clickthrus were 36.  My Overture clickthrus were 10 on just my Feedburner feed, which is 1/3 of my total feed.  If I was running Overture on all my feeds, it would be about the same as AdSense.  And this is for a service that hasn't even begun to be optimized.
  • For the first time, I can see what is actually being "viewed" in RSS.  This is a really big deal.  I've got 3200 RSS subscribers.  I had no idea if they actually read anything.  Now I know exactly how many of them are viewing my feed daily and I also know what posts they are viewing.  For example 355 RSS subscribers to my Feedburner feed viewed my Shake Shack post yesterday.  This concept is similar to the "open rate" in email.  It's a critical stat in a push/pull medium.

This is complicated stuff and I am just beginning to figure it all out.  But I can say the following without equivocation.

  • Most bloggers will have way more RSS readers than web readers.  Knowing the real size of this audience and what they read is critical.
  • The revenue opportunity for blog related PPC advertising in RSS is equal or greater than the opportunity for web-based advertising.  I assume the same will be true for large media properties once RSS becomes mainstream.
  • Feedburner is ahead of the curve in providing critical RSS services.  They are delivering what RSS publishers need.  Kudos to them.

I subscribe to you via Bloglines, Steve, and I don't see any ads whatsoever. I also use Feedburner with the Amazon ads - awesome stuff. I think you may have to look into making sure there are no "rogue" feeds out there of this site. Feedburner has a great article on how to make sure people can only subscribe to your feedburner feed.

Here's the feed-centric blog approach taken to its logical conclusion: "Scratch" -- blog software that can only be accessed via its RSS/ATOM feed for reading (and you have to use a meta-weblog API-based client for authoring). It does not have a web UI at all:

http://scratch.rubyforge.org/

(plus, to the best of my knowledge, it is written on-top-of "Ruby On Rails" which is going to a very, very popular web application development platform very, very soon)

I read your blog via a RSS feed through Bloglines. According to Bloglines, you have 356 subscribers, which is suspiciously close to the 355 RSS subscribers who read your shake shack posting.

Posted by: harriet | Apr 1, 2005 3:21:30 PM

My browser says Bloglines has 281 subscribers. Yet I have found accounts that seem to map to the same RSS, have the same human readable name, but which I infer have different underlying instances because the counts don't match up (for example, may be why the 281 I see doesn't reconcile with the 355 number?) ... ??? There are also cases in Bloglines where the feed is public with public subscribers but doesn't show up in the directory ...

I can see the % of pages viewed from my feed rising continually.
The good news for contextual advertisement over feeds is that syndicated entries have 100% relevancy.
The bad news is that people (including me) hate ads in feeds.

Posted by: BobbyMasteria | Apr 7, 2005 10:57:12 AM

First:

If you're considering jumping on the rss advertising bandwagon, I suggest you consider one thing before leaping:

What if one of the reasons RSS has become popular is that it -- typically, to date -- does not contain advertisements?

Second:

How long before developers start building ad filters into client software and web-based aggregators?

Third:

Two words: CLICK FRAUD.

Now, I'm happy for those guys (Feedburner), and the stuff they're doing is (mostly) pretty cool, but there's a very distinct lack of apparent due dilligence here, WRT the advertising side of it.

What they're selling ultimately is convenience. That'll work, to a point. But I'm concerned it isn't defensible.

Posted by: mitch | Apr 7, 2005 5:58:29 PM

Maybe I'm missing something, but.. uh..

Most RSS readers check the feed URL once every one, three or six hours. Counting the number of hits to those URLs seems.. bound to result in inaccurate numbers.

What I'm seeing here in the ads is the achillies heel of contextual advertising. Take today's entries (April 9th), for example. I view two entries, one about a bike ride and boat house, the other about Little League opening day. The ads I get are for US Metal Buildings (perfect for boat storage) and another for Little League Team Software. Though they contextually match the blog entries, I'm interested in neither ad. If I were on a search engine, I'd probably only see the ads if I were searching for something related, and they'd probably be relevant. But here, on a blog with generalist posts, the ad server can't divine anything useful about me or my interests.

Far more useful would be if the blog was matched to a vertical of ads that had a probability of matching the readers' interests, such as, "this is a VC blog, so let's serve financial ads, or luxury auto ads.'' Even better might be behaviorial targeting that served ads based on where a visitor has been clicking over the last 10 or 20 web sites.

Definately an intriguing possibility for advertising. I see huge benefits form this but love hearing from people that HATE it to give me some insight I may not have had. My main concern:

WILL AN RSS FEED WITH EMBEDDED ADVERTISING CAUSE ISSUES WITH ANOTHER SOURCE REPUBLISHING IT? THEREFORE HURTING DISTRIBUTION & BACKLINKS?

I am thinking yes. Thoughts?
