Bagging the Post
I've written three blog entries in the past three days that I've decided not to post.
Why?
Because after reading them, I just didn't feel like posting them.
It's a new experience for me.
I can't remember doing that more than three times total over the past 20 months that I have been blogging.
I feel a change coming over my blogging habits.
I used to post anything that I felt like saying.
Now I feel some sort of obligation to say something meaningful.
If I can't add anything to a link, its just easier to post it to del.icio.us and have it appear in my daily links.
I am not sure this is a good thing.
Apparently I am not alone in this experience.
Joi Ito expresses some of the same thoughts in his "Becoming Boring" post.
I'll try to avoid becoming boring too, but its hard to be meaningful every day.

I think we will start to see a change in the way people publish and subscribe to blogs.
Currently I would imagine most people publish and subscribe to a single feed, for your blog that includes VC insights as well as music and family news. Personally I would like to just receive your VC insights but I dont see that I can just subscribe to that category?
My feeling is that we will start to see this feature introduced into blogging software to enable readers to subscribe to whatever they are particularly interested in while omitting the rest. I know that would help to unburden my feed reader.
Of course you could set up a different blog or simply not post "non VC" related material but neither of those options fit your needs I think and are a burden too.
btw thanks for the VC insights to date, I have gained from your efforts.

I'm with Ian - there's a lot of posting here that frankly isn't very interesting to me, but some of it is really insightful. I actually prefer to subscribe to blogs that only post once every few days since the more frequently updated ones wind up sucking up too much of my time.
Your good points are good enough to make it worth the time spent reading the less interesting ones, but I'd be happy to see an improvement in the signal-noise ratio or else a way to choose the types of posts I read here.

Sounds to me like there are two points here. First, it seems there would be an opportunity for someone to figure out how to allow people to subscribe just to blog posts that have a specific tag. Seems like a pretty trivial update to the reader side of the problem.
Second, Fred, you can't be meaningful, on all topics, everyday. Besides, when you participate in a wide based forum like you do, where you are sharing thoughts which span a multitude of topics, you are going to have mundane things to say. If every conversation people had with you was chock full of super meaningful stuff, I'm guessing people would be exhausted from the experience. You present a much more human interface through your variety. It's precisely because of that variety that the meaningful stuff you do say seems all the more so. More approachable and less likely to be interpreted as bloviating.

i wouldn't worry
Fred, your blog is your scrapbook- it's thinking by writing, it's not a part time job working for an audience- blogging is done for your own benefit
Write what ever the hell you want- don't worry about quality because what ever rubbish you initially post will most certainly lead to more quality entries
As for all the other commentators, I reckon you are too demanding - for the lack of a better euthemism

Interesting ideas
I've chosen to set up several blogs
One "semi-public" with various rants, mostly lightweight, one internal, family and friends for serious stuff (investments, data etc.) one straight internal for hard core rants (stuff that pisses me off) mostly for bookmarking and annotating.
Haven't moved to catagories nor tags... yet
Furthermore, suspect that sometimes, those of us new to blogging have a pile of "stuff" to get off our chests. After a few months we've pretty well said those things and feel better.
Damn - maybe I'll have to post this myself

I find it also helps to remind myself constantly who are the various constituents you're doing this for...and remembering one of them is yourself...
also, could the boredome/ennui be resulting from having done a text blog for so long and thus having a "been there, done that" feeling?
It seems like you're really excited about the podcasting...maybe that'll be your primary blogging venue for a while...
regardless, thanks for the blogging...in whatever format or frequency you choose.

Joi Ito's blog has become boring. All he writes about where he has been and where he is going. I don't care about his itinerary.
Your blog is the first VC blog I read each day and I no longer bother with Joi's. You should put some ads on Joi's site to drive more traffic your way!

Don't split the topics. Much of your music discussion is either directly related to the technology you speculate on, or is interesting enough from a fans perspective to be very much relevent. I'm not a VC, but enjoy learning about your business. Your posts are written in a way that is understandable to the non-VC world, and it seems like the professionals in your line of work enjoy them as well.
I remember you commenting to me a month ago or so when I was in town last that you had to remind yourself that your Top 50 albums list was YOUR top 50 albums and not the consensus top 50 albums. I think that's fair, and I fully accept this notion. In the same sense, it's your blog. Blog anything you want my friend.
Your's is the first blog I read in the morning and it has been a great read for more than a year now. Don't change a damn thing...
