Take Me Off Your Lists Please

I've noticed a few lists out there trying to determine who the "movers and shakers" are in the blog world.

There's blogebrity.

And now Always On and Technorati have published the Open Media 100 .

To paraphrase from the famous Treasure of Sierra Madre line, we don't need no lists and I don't want to be on any stinking lists!

Open Media?  Then let's make it open. Let's keep the desire to rank and create clubs in check guys.

And in any case, the technology will let us discover what and who to read better than any blog or media company will.

And if everybody is directed to read the "A list" bloggers, we'll miss all the best stuff which is being blogged by people who get maybe 100 to 1000 readers.

That's what I love about blogging.  Everyone has a printing press and I can read whomever I want.

Please don't ruin it with old media crap like lists.

I read your blog all the time, so thanks for having a great, insightful blog that, more often than not, directs me to other sources, blogs, ideas, whathaveyou that I might otherwise not know about. You're right that it is one of the primary powers in blogs: turning people onto new things, people.

If I were to read Mark Canter because of a list, then get turned onto others via his in-post links, TrackBacks, and / or commentators, then I do not necessarily see any problem with such serendipity. That a "publication" decides to compile an A List is ultimately no different to me than a blogger's blog-roll, such as your own.

After all, I think most people are smart enough to differentiate between something technologically generated (Technorati) and something editorially generated (AO's 100).

Leaving the ego / celebrity aside, lists are, if nothing else, a great place to start learning about blogs for one who might not know where else to start.

Or, if people need to have lists (and I think we do, just based on the number of VH1 "Top 100 Hair Bands Of 1985" shows that seem to air around the click), at least make them open lists where anyone can vote.
