This Is Cool

Have you ever come across an mp3 file on the Internet and wanted to download it and put it on your iPod, but didn't have time to deal with it?

This happens to me all the time.

So I heard of a cool way to do this and just tried it tonite and it works great.

If you find an mp3 file with its own URL, like my MP3 of the Week, simply tag it in delicious with a tag that is clearly your own. For example, I use "fred'spodcast" as my tag. Feel free to tag mp3s with that tag if you want me to listen to them.

Then you take the RSS feed for that delicious tag, in my case http://del.icio.us/rss/tag/fred'spodcast, and burn that as a Feedburner feed.

Make sure to enable that Feedburner feed with their SmartCast service.

That creates a new feed. In my case, it's http://feeds.feedburner.com/Delicious/tag/fredspodcast.

Then you put that podcast feed into iPodder, iPodderX, or some other podcasting client.

That's it.

The next time you synch your iPod, all the mp3s you tagged will be in your iPod.

So start tagging and sharing mp3s with me and your friends. This is a great way to get into delicious an enjoy great music at the same time.

It is quite cool. If unlicensed IP makes its way in there, does del.icio.us risk going the way of Napster? They got Napster for providing pointers which is what it sounds like del.icio.us is doing.

I never thought of creating a feed of mp3's like that...very nifty!

If you use a Mac, let me share my technique though - you don't get a feed, but it's an easy one step after installation: First, you need to use Firefox for your browser, then install greasemonkey, which allows you to customize web sites you visit. Finally, install Foxipod. Foxipod takes advantaage of greasemonkey by inserting a small graphic after an mp3 link. When you click the foxipod link instead of the mp3 link, it will automatically download the mp3 and insert it into a foxipod playlist in itunes which then syncs up on your next ipod sync. One click goodness!

Thanks again for the idea on the feeds - I'm starting to think of other ways this could be used!

Hey Fred - very cool indeed. I just tagged a song by Okkervil River for you. It's called For Real. I wanted to test this out. It took a little while for the feeds to be updated, but it works like a charm.

I believe if you set up your own free del.icio.us account, say, delicious/avcmusing or whatever, and tagged to that account, it would cut down on other's ability to send stuff onto your computer. You could get a feed of pages you specifically tag -- not merely the feed of all things with that tag. (I'm confusing even myself, but it's really simple.)

it's a cool idea but it seems to be far more complex than doing the following:

1) download the mp3
2) put it on your ipod through itunes/ml_ipod

i guess if you want to be able to share it through the rss feed then that's cool but if all you want to do is put it on your personal audio player... just download it and drag it onto your player and be done with it.

BTW, I'm making UI and sys improvements, but there's thousands of mp3 links at songzilla.blogspot.com on the pulldown menu, if anyone is looking.

i can't tell if you're being facetious or not but i guess if i were to respond to that comment as if it were serious:

most of the mp3s people find on the WWW (not p2p networks or ftps) are unlicensed and homemade. for instance, nina gordon's recent cover of NWA's "straight outta compton". she put it on her site for free so people could download and listen to it.

it's not like people are finding full albums for free on the web through google (though, that is possible in a way).

As always it's a bit of both. I know that not every mp3 being downloaded is illegal, and I myself belong to the long list of artists who post their stuff for free, but I do sense a growing attitude online of folks thinking they have the right obatian any song by any means. I do it too. Limewire is just too tempting, and technology is just making it easier to get away with it. I just want to remind folks that the next time they hit the download button, somebody might not be happy about it.

You, as I've said, are not normal, and I'm playing D.A. here. I just don't like the trend, it's dangerous. Mark my words, in ten years you'll see I was right. Do you think a high school senior with a limited budget will make the same decisions as you do? Maybe your audience isn't the right target for my ranting, but somebody other than Lars Ulrich needs to be voicing these things.

This is a very interesting idea. Feedburner is very cool. Another use could be:
1.You have a podcast that uses feedburner as it's feed
2.You can set up Feedburner to link in content that you post to del.icio.us using your method above. This would give your listeners your podcast content as well as audio files you think are cool or relevant. The trick here is to set it up properly so that it feeds in the tag you want as well. For example, I don't do a podcast yet but anything I del.icio.us tag as "pub" gets fed into the blog's rss feed as well as the usual content. I do a simalar thing for my Firefox tips page feed where any thing I del.icio.us tag as "firefox" gets put into that feed.

Very cool but you can now do it without even using Feedburner! Del.icio.us have introduced system tags (see their blog - http://blog.del.icio.us/blog/ ) whereby you can do a tag search on all MP3 files with a certain tag and generate the RSS feed with enclosures. Easy peasy :)

Yup, James is right -- it's now as easy as setting your podcast client to http://del.icio.us/rss/your_username/system:media:audio to get any audio file you bookmark with Delicious as a feed with enclosures.

A great idea indeed, and one (as an educator) that will be of great use to me, my students and colleagues. I'm already full of ideas of how this could be applied to audio content to make it available for students as a podcast
