for:fredwilson

Del.icio.us rolled out formal support for the for: tag that has been getting a lot of informal usage lately.

I have been tagging stuff for my wife and several friends for the past couple weeks and it's a nice way to both save the link for yourself and easily get it to someone else.

It works like this.

If you know the del.icio.us username of someone (I am fredwilson) then you can tag anything in del.icio.us with the for: tag and it will be sent to them and only them.

Here is a brief explanation on how its used on the del.icio.us blog.

So, if you'd like to send me a link, just post it in del.ico.us and add the for:fredwilson tag to whatever else you tag it with.

I've put the RSS feed to the for:fredwilson tag at the top of MyYahoo so I'll see it everytime I launch my browser.

I think this should be pretty useful.

Brad Feld is using it as well.

And so is Michael Arrington at TechCrunch.

I'll be tagging some stuff for both of them.

Is there a way to get tag unions to work in your for: box? Specifically I'm thinking "for:+system:filetype:mp3" so you can subscribe to your private podcast.

Thanks to your multiple posts on the subject, I'm now officially a del.icio.us convert. The only reason I haven't fully ditched Spurl is that I still like having private bookmark functionality. Any idea when this will be added?

Tom, you could always tag something "for:yourself". No one would be able to see it besides you (I think).

Doesn't this open up a new path for Spam?

What prevents a malicious advertiser from obtaining a collection of del.icio.us usernames and then cranking out "for:" tags to some Viagra website?!

We've already seen comment spam, trackback spam, and referrer log spam! Somebody could now create Podcast spam directly to Fred.

I, too, think that this will open up a new path for spam which will potentially be harder to filter. However, if spam prevents these type of conveniences to come up, then it would be doing more harm.

Also, I think there should be a way to disable this by default if there is such a way.
