BTW, I assume from the post that you're already a fan of Kinney, but if you haven't heard it, be sure to check out "Dirty Angels," track 7 on the same album. It's the song I wish had existed the summer I was 16.

Great Podcast guys.

I had read a review on the recording industry book Gotham Gal mentioned and forgot to pick it up and have ordered it from Amazon. Thanks for reminding me about it. That drummer has an MBA from Harvard I believe, so his insight into the backwardsness of the industry is quite enlightening from what I'm told. Not a big Semisonic fan, but will dive into this book anyway.

Re: radio and NYC radio...

I'm having a hard time reconciling what everyone accepts as fact that NYC radio, and all radio sucks (see payola chapter(s) in the above mentioned book) and Fred's claim that HD radio is going to revolutionize the medium. We have debated on this blog about the revival of radio being all about content, not tech (in mine and Jackson's op). I have also pointed out that the deal the big conglomerates brokered with the FCC on digitizing broadcast radio left these purveyors of boredom retaining every bit of the spectrum that they currently own with their analog licenses (I STILL do not know how this was pulled off). This does not make for an atmosphere of more choices, diversity, pioneering programming, etc... More like a crap load more channels playing the same payola driven list of songs no matter what genre (Satisfaction vs. Sister Morphine).

It was refreshing to hear some Kevin Kinney being broadcast from NY. Kevin is an Atlantan and can be seen at clubs downtown frequently. He was the frontman/guitar player/song writer for Drivin’ & Cryin’ for many years. He is a truly talented guy. Any D&C record is worth the price. He cranks out a lot of solo material, and I have a hard time keeping up with all of it, but I haven’t heard anything I didn’t liked yet. One of my favorite D&C tunes that gets played a lot on local radio down here is “Honeysuckle Blue”. To me, the lyrics seem to be a story of a southerner who regrets his move to NYC and yerns to return to ‘the promised land’ of the south.
