My 50 Favorite Albums
Elvis Costello is one of the greatest songwriters of our generation.
Jackson says his best are his early trio, My Aim is True, This Year's Model, and Armed Forces.
As great as those three records are, they are not my favorite Elvis Costello record.
That title belongs to my top 50 pick of this week, King of America.
This is the record where Elvis explored american music, much like the Rolling Stones did with Exile on Main Street.
And the result is equally great.
While the entire record is stellar, my particular favorites are Brilliant Mistake, Elvis's cover of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood, Jack of All Parades, and the two amazing tracks at the end of the A side and the start of the B side (I own it on vinyl) - I'll Wear It Proudly and America Without Tears.
If you don't have this record and are an Elvis Costello fan, you should get it.
I was always more into the early Elvis for obvios reasons, he was edgier, and angrier. As the eighties unfolded he gave us great songs like 'Shipbiulding' and 'Good Year For The Roses' as well as the songs on this great record that you have chosen. Over the course of my inevitable maturation, I find I appreciate the sadder, more sedate Elvis, and therefore have no issue with this pick.
EXCEPT THAT 'THIS YEARS MODEL' KICKS ASS!

I'm blaming you, Chervokas, and Jackson for the Amazon package that will be arriving with these discs in it. I prefer the sadder/sedate Elvis cause I'm old.

He's also an amazing conversationalist. I remember watching him guest host the Late Show one night when Letterman was out with Shingles. That was one of the best shows I've ever seen. He was very impressive -- and he didn't even sing (I don't think).

"She said that she was working for ABC News / It was as much of the alphabet as she knew how to use"
It's a really good album. I agree with Jackson that the first three are his best, I also liked Blood and Chocolate, and I still buy most of his new stuff. The morose stuff doesn't work for me, nor do the records like Imperial Bedroom where he tried to get too cute with the arrangements and the songs weren't as good. What was good about King of America was that it had energy, a great sound and great lyrics.
He is always interesting to see live, though. I've seen him five times over a period of 20 years, and no two shows were ever remotely the same. I saw him in the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1982, where he was backed by the Royal Philharmonic (imagine "Accidents Will Happen" with a full string section), and on the Spectacular Spinning Songbook tour in 1986, where audience members got up on stage to spin a wheel to determine which song the band played (guest MCs: Buster Poindexter and Penn Jillette).
You have to admire a guy who is as willing as he is to take chances and evolve.
