My 50 Favorite Albums (continued)

Any record that was recorded almost 25 years ago that is also Josh's favorite has to make the list.

Zoso was sitting silently in my vinyl collection for the last 15+ years as I moved on from classic rock into new genres and new bands.

But thank god for the nine year old kid who brought it back out with a bang.

Hey, Hey Mama, said the way you move, Gonna make You sweat, Gonna make You groove,

Zoso is a decade for me, the 1970s, I was 10 when the record came out and its songs were the soundtrack of my teenage years.

Slow dancing to Stairway to Heaven until drums kicked in and it was time to rock.

Black Dog and Rock and Roll on the radio all the time.

Flipping the disk after Stairway to Heaven to get to the mellow side.

And my favorite Led Zeppelin track of all time, When The Levee Breaks.  I just can't get enough of the wailing harmonica and the hammering drums.

And the drums.  John Bonham was the greatest rock drummer of all time and he did his best work on this record.  I wish I could have seen Bonham play with Four Sticks.  I never did.

Well that's basically it for this one.  Time to go flip the record.

Amen brother! re: “When the Levy Breaks”.... Those big drums were captured by hanging microphones on the 30' ceiling in the large room of a marble floored mansion. Knowing this, listen to it again and that's exactly what you'd imagine it would sound like. Great record all around. Even the geeky J.R. Tolkien themes don't wear on me either like they do on previous/subsequent efforts.

I've even found myself digging Stairway a lot lately having heard it as many times as you probably have. The slow dance comment is classic. What did you do when the up tempo part started? It was always interesting to watch what couples did at this moment in the song. It was always my queue to attempt a smooch. If I got rejected I could go back and hang with my friends, if it was reciprocated, well... That's a story for another blog.

As beaten down as this album is (due to classic rock radio), it's a keeper. The much unheralded "Battle of Evermore" actually features the GREAT Sandy Denny from Fairport Convention on backing vocals - and she puts the power in that song. If you haven't heard Fairport Convention, look no further than two absolute masterpiece albums: "Liege and Leaf" and "Unhalfbricking."

Both of those albums are must-haves, featuring not only Sandy Denny, but a young, hungry Richard Thompson, too. That was Fairport at their most influential and their best. I really think you'd enjoy both of these.

distinct "stairway" 1970s memory -- it was the concluding tune at every summer camp "social" (with the all girls camp across the lake) and i distinctly remember what all us boys did during the rock part of the tune -- same thing we did during the slow part: rub our little crotches against whatever girl was letting us while fumbling to either grope pre-adolescent breasts, or, if extremely lucky, unhook bra clips before the lights came on.

then, if said efforts weren't too poorly received, came the loooong amorous after-dark walk with new love back to the buses (mercifully parked far far from the dance)...

Jackson: no disrespect, but Bonham crushes Peart. Peart may be technically gifted and have the stamina and precision thing going, but nobody rocks harder than Bonham.

I like to say that technical superiority does not necessarily make for the "best" of anything. If it did, we wouldn't listen to anything but Rush. Let's face it; Rush doesn't rock all that hard. In fact, I'll be shocked if a single Rush record makes it on Fred's top 50 here.
