A Picture Tells A Thousand Words

This photo was on the front page of the Metro section of today's New York Times.

It shows Freddy Ferrer, who did not get enough votes to avoide a runoff, celebrating the decision by the number two vote getter, Anthony Weiner, to concede the primary to Ferrer.

This made me think of those cartoons where each person in the picture has a balloon with their private thoughts in it.

I don't do photoshop, so you'll just have to leave that part to the imagination.

Freddy - "I feel like Agassi winning a five set match to get the priviledge of playing Federer."

Weiner - "That was the easiest trade of my life. I gave up the opportunity to either lose to Ferrer in a runoff or lose to Bloomberg in a landslide and got the pole position for 2009."

Gifford - "This sucks so bad I can't even say how bad this sucks."

Virginia - "Now what."

The fact is that Bloomberg is going to crush Ferrer. He's done a fine job and most new yorkers don't want to make a change right now.

Weiner comes out the big winner in this whole deal in my mind.

I'm so glad that Miller got his ass handed to him... I hated how negative he was being about a guy who was obviously doing a bangup job.

Fred, you've got this wrong: while MB is a huge favorite, I boldly predict you will see the poll numbers tighten considerably. FF has a puncher's chance in this race, which any politician would take....

Then too, MB is a Republican - at least nominally - and any major metropolitan area has to ask itself - are we better prepared to respond to a crisis under the Administration MB supports, indeed, went a very long way toward helping to get elected.

I wish it mattered what administration Bloomberg pledges allegiance to but it just doesn't matter to me.

I feel incredibly comfortable with Mike in the drivers seat.

Fred,

I'm not a New Yorker, and I don't know the local politics vey well, but the impression that I get is that Bloomberg is very popular among white New Yorkers, but he may be less popular among African-Americans and Latinos and that the voting predilections of Asians are very much up in the air.

The thing is that New York is now a majority minority city.

As I said, I don;t know squat about NYC politics, but I'm not convinced that it's Bloomberg in a landslides.

After last summer's sickening display at MSG, I'm a lot less comfortable with Mike in the driver's seat....he sold his sould forever in that morass of hard-core, hateful conservatism...

I'm with Mike. New Yorkers, white or not, still remember Dinkins. New York needs a fiscally strong Mayor. I don't care what party he aligns himself with, who he sleeps with, or who he prays to, and I believe most New Yorkers feel the same. I hated him at first for the smoking thing, but he turned me around with how he dealt with the MTA, and we all know what assholes run that show. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. New York is doing just fine with Mike.

I think what Virginia is actually thinking in the photo is: "I'll never use photoshop again."

I'm impressed with you Wilson's and your pragmatism on the NYC mayoral election pick. Shows courage to vote outside one’s party affiliation in such deeply divided times. Tom W.'s thoughts are predictable.

I know nothing about the hard hitting issues that drive the choice up there, but from what Jackson has filled me in on maybe if Tom were to rally the Mr. Softy driver union vote, Ferrer might stand a chance:>)

BTW…Is Ferrer related to that doctor in “The Man With Two Brian’s”? Oh, wait a minute, that was Dr. Hefferrerer.

Well, it so happens that Freddy's a friend of mine - I know him, and he's a decent man. After all, he presided over the rebuilding of the South Bronx and didn't get rich off it. Sure, he's made mistakes and yes, he's not the biggest personality in the world...but Tony, it strikes me that I'm not the one here whose position is predictable. I'm a white guy from the suburbs working for a Puerto Rican from the Bronx. You guys need to open your eyes a bit and go a little beyond the Manhattan-centric safety of Mayor Mike.
