Goodbye AIM and Yahoo Messenger

I've had two IM clients for god knows how long, AIM and Yahoo Messenger.

I know its crazy and Charlie's been telling me to get Trillian and consolidate IM clients for months now.

But intertia is a powerful force and I've been using AIM and Yahoo Messenger without fail for a long long time.

But no more.

Both pissed me off in a single day.

AIM installed and started launching AOL Explorer every time AIM launched.  I spent five minutes trying to figure out how to stop that.  After five minutes, I just got pissed.  AIM is gone from my computer now.

Yahoo Messenger automatically installed the Yahoo toolbar without my consent in Firefox and tried twice to change my start page and my default search field. That's uncool.  Yahoo Messenger is gone from my computer now too.

Hopefully the folks behind Trillian won't try any stupid stuff like that and we'll have a long relationship, like I had with AIM and Yahoo before they messed it up today.

I'd just like to say that I've been using Trillian for a long while now. The only problem I've had with them is infrequent disconnections to the various services. If this one manages to anger you, you can try gaim and various other freeware all-in-one packages.

I can second the reccomedation of Gaim. I've used it to consolidate my accounts (MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Gmail) for about 2 years with minimal issues.

The killer feature of Gaim (and Trillian) is the logging feature. It keeps a log of all of your chats, so you can dig up an old chat at a later time.

Just download and install the Windows version, enter your account info (Yahoo, MSN, etc.) and you are good to go. No spyware, adware, etc, will be installed.

Trillian has become almost a 'corporate standard' for us. It now included plugins for Skype and Jabber, so nearly every IM client known to man works w/ Trillian. Buy the pro version. It's worth the $30.

Good for you! Inertia still has the best of me, though i feel a change in my future to either trillian or gaim real soon. Same reasons as the ones you stated.

Welcome to the Trillian club...I haven't tried Gaim though...

I am surprised at Yahoo!'s stealth installs and changes...you thought they'd learn after all the user complaints against AOL and Real Networks (not an IM client of course), for pulling similar stuff.

I like Yahoo! toolbar though, and think it's the best one out there so far...but having multiple IM clients going at the same time has been just too much for me for a while.

It's an opportunity for Google perhaps to offer Trillian/Gaim like neutrality given that they're the new kid on the block with nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I too made the switch from Y! / AIM not too long ago. I've used Gaim and Trillian - my personal preference is Gaim these days. Such a huge improvement.

Fred - you'll love Trillian. Pay the $30 - get the pro version. And - get the Skype add-in so all your Skype chat goes through Trillian also.

AIM has been the worst app on my system for approximately 5 years now. I completely depsise it.

Hate Trillian too, actually :(

gAIM seems good, but won't install sometimes because of dll conflicts on my systems.

I'm exclusively on Google Talk for now :)

verichat works great for your Treo. Works for Yahoo, MSN, AIM and ICQ. Has buddy pounce to let you know when someone is online (via SMS) and stealth features... You can even send and receive files and use their bots to get information.

Trillian is good, but GAIM is great, and i sopen source and well supported.

I always used icq then msn came along. Ive tried trillion a few times ... many moons ago and always found the software quite buggy ... although im talking two years ago. so it may be better now.

Welcome to the Trillian camp. I opted out of the whole IM thing for several years because I refused to have three or for separate clients running on my machine at the same time. Now that Trillian is stable, it's been a great tool for me.

fred - i forget, are you a mac guy? doesn't sound like it. i've used all the clients, and the best is ichat. basic im works well and it has the added advantage of _seamless_ audio and video. i've been using it with all my mac friends. but i recently started working with a guy who is windows, so that won't work. looking to replicate the experience, we tried skype and it's the best. the ability to go to talking instantly and to conference is great. and the quality is better than on my vonage line. i've taken it as my personal mission to get everyone to dump their aol accounts (i've always managed to stay clear of yahoo!) and move to skype.
