Nuggets
It's that time of the week where I pull out a relatively unknown record out of our collection and riff on it for a couple paragraphs.
I've got the Stones on my brain this morning after seeing them last night at Giants Stadium.
But I honestly don't think I can call any Stones record a Nugget (with the possible exception of Between the Buttons - I gotta consider that).
So I am going to pull out a record that was written as either a homage or a rebuttal or possibly both to the Stones' greatest record, Exile on Main Street.
In 1993, an unknown young woman singer named Liz Phair released a record that was raw, angry, powerful, and unabashedly patterned after Exile. She called it Exile in Guyville.
That record was in heavy rotation in our apartmnet and house for pretty much an entire year.
We still pull it out and play it every now and then.
Exile in Guyville for a time was a candidate for my Top 50, but it ultimately didn't make the cut. It came damn close.
So its a Nugget instead.
Give it a listen.

Well, it's a great record and Liz is an amazing talent. Gonna see her next month.

I think the idea that "Guyville" is in any way a response, never mind a song by song response, to Exile is ludicrous.
It is, however, a brilliant album. I freakin' love Liz Phair. It think he's the voice of her generation--and by extension MY generation. When I first heard Guyville my jaw literally dropped. I didn't close my mouth again until I was a good few songs in. Ezra Pound counseled writers to "make it new," and she did it with the kind of lyrics found in Help Me Mary, Dance of the Seven Veils....and later songs like Alice Springs from Whipsmart, or Uncle Alvarez from Whitechocolatespaceegg. ("I wanna be cool, smart, vulnerable, and lucious," she once wrote. Who doesn't!
Plus she rocks! (I always was a sucker for a brainy chick who rocks!) "Mezmerizing" is the obvious Stones riff on Guyville. But elsewhere on this album (Never Said Nothing), and throughout her career (She's got a cover of "Mother's Little Helper" coming out on a soundtrack album, but I can't remember the details.)
Even her pop move last year (and I didn't think it was such an enormous departure from her previous stuff) was good, and in places brilliant (Little Digger, the song about the son of a divorced mother reacting to her new boyfriend, and her response to his response...emotional, unique, great stuff).
I've seen tough-minded, grown men brought to tears by live performances of "Divorce Song."
I am eagerly awaiting her new disk next month and her gig at Irving Plaza on Oct. 18th (she's playing two nights, but I'll be there on that Tuesday).

I must be the only person on the planet who has never heard this record. I don't doubt that she made a classic, and I don'tcount her out as a has been, BUT, how can a woman write anything that resembles the Stones? I just can't see it. I think one needs a cock to be a cock, and the Stones are cocks.
