Possibly, but I think the closest answer is Rhett Miller

The Gotham Gal and I saw him do a solo acoustic show at The Stephen Talkhouse last night and he was simply amazing.

He played a few songs off his 2002 solo record, The Instigator.

But it seemed like most of the songs were from his upcoming solo record, The Believer, which is slated to be out in February 2006.

He has a frenetic energy that combines with wonderful songs to create a really excellent package.

The highlights were a great cover of Ziggy Stardust and a love song he dedicated to two of his friends who are getting married next weekend - Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love With You.

Fred, since you refer to Rhett's "solo" records, I imagine you're aware of his band, The Old 97's.

From what I gather of your tastes from reading the blog, grab their new "Alive and Wired" immediately.

Saw Rhett doing the solo show back in 2003 and loved it. Didn't know he had a new album coming out, so I'll be looking out for it now.

As Mike said, do check out the Old 97s if you haven't before.

Fred - if you like Rhett Miller you need to get the Old 97's Too Far To Care and Fight Songs albums. I love 'Timebomb' and 'Oppenheimer' myself (although my wife disagrees about Oppenheimer...)

Fight Songs is definitely the best Old 97's album to start with. It's pop with some country twang, not the other way around. Once you're a fan, Satellite Rides and Too Far to Care should be your next stops. I've never seen Rhett Miller play solo, but when he has the entire Old 97's crew, it's quite a show.
