The Greatest Rock And Roll Band In The World

Get Yer Ya-Yas Out starts out with the following statement:

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the greatest rock n roll band in the world, The Rolling Stones"

Img_1091

The Gotham Gal and I took the family to see the Stones last night at Giants Stadium and I am happy to report that they remain the greatest rock n roll band in the world.

Last week at Coldplay at the Garden, Josh said to me, "dad, Chris Martin needs to go to the school of rock"

Mick, Keith and the gang don't need to go to the school of rock because they invented half of those moves.

And last night they showed us that they haven't forgotten any of them.

I am not suggesting that the Stones are at the peak of their live brilliance which was recorded at Madison Square Garden in 1969 and is available for posterity on Ya Yas, but they really haven't lost much.

Most importantly, they entertained my whole family for the entire 2 hour show and not once, even past 11pm, did the kids want to go home. Josh said to me as we were leaving that it was the "best rock concert he's ever been to" and he's been to a bunch.

Here's the set list, with color commentary

Start Me Up - of course
You Got Me Rockin - just so so
Shattered - with a NYC intro
Tumblin Dice - great version
Rough Justice - much better live
Ruby Tuesday - i loved it, the kids thought it was weak
Heartbreaker - great, best it could be without Mick Taylor
Night Time Is The Right Time - Ray Charles tune with duet with Lisa Fisher
The Worst - Keith sang a couple tunes while Mick took a break
Infamy - better live too

Img_1098Then a small "club style" stage breaks off from the main stage with the band on it and starts moving into the crowd.  It ends up at the other end of the floor.  Great effect.  They played four songs on it.

Miss You - with Mick on guitar while stage was moving - a highlight for sure
Oh No, Not You Again - the kids loved it.  their favorite from the new record.
She's So Cold - I never liked that song
Honky Tonk Woman - while the stage moved back

Out of Control - off Bridges to Babylon - i might have to get that record!

Then they went into a four song rock orgy to finish the main set which consisted of:

Sympathy
JJ Flash
Brown Sugar
Satisfaction

The whole family was up on our chairs dancing and we basically went nuts when they did Satisfaction.

Encores:

You Can't Always Get What You Want - Josh's favorite
It's Ony Rock N Roll - with fireworks to finish

Img_1108Basically, these guys know how to put on a rock concert and they put one on last night.

The test is if you leave singing the songs.

We sure did that last night.

And we had a blast.

» Stones and Other Concerts from Newsome.Org
Fred Wilson has posted a review from the Stone's Giants Stadium show last night. He lists the entire set, with a little commentary. I took Cassidy to see the Stones the last time they were in Houston (1/25/03), because one of my graduate school friends... [Read More]

Hell yeah you had fun!!! "The best concert ever..." from Josh. That's an endorsement I can get behind. Over at Trickster's blog there's been some blather about never seeing them in a stadium, not a concert, only event that should take place in a stadium is football, blah, blah, blah,...

What those guys should really be saying is that they wouldn't want to see any band OTHER than the Rolling Stones in a stadium. The simple fact is that the Stones are one of maybe two, I take that back..., they are the ONLY band that can pull off a stadium show.

I wish I could justify the expenditure to go see them without being exiled to my kids playhouse in the back yard for a month (Jason does have it right about the ticket prices), but I can go on living because I got to see them twice in the past thankfully.

Man, are you guys lucky...

Judging from Live8, I'd bet Pink Floyd could pull off a stadium show.

Well, I'm with Chervokas on the stadium thing generally - though clearly Fred had great seats!

However, an arena like MSG is downright cozy compared to Giants Stadium and I had the pleasure of watching the Stones intense professionalism there Tuesday night....was a fine show.

My blather was not about never seeing the Stones at a stadium. It was about never seeing anyone at a stadium. Rock concerts at a stadium are like a night at a strip club---you spend a lot of dough and go home dissatisfied.

I've seen a small handful of rock acts make a 20,000 seat hockey arena seem intimate and really create an audience connection instead of just presenting a spectacle--Springsteen and David Bowie come to mind.

(I've seen plenty of other rock acts at 20,000 seat arenas, everyone you can think of, including The Stones. It can be okay, but there's an emotional connectedness btwn audience and performer that is missing typically. My experience is that anything over 5000 seats is too big for that kind of connection to happen except with very special performers.)

I've never seen anyone make a 100,000 seat stadium show work that way, whether I've been in lousy seats or in good standing room spots on the field. That includes Springsteen, The Clash, The Who. It just doesn't work for me. The stadium spectacles just leave me feeling empty and disconnected.

Just bustin' your chops Jason, havin' a little fun at your expense. For anybody but the Stones I agree with you whole heartedly. Although, I do remember Bono and U2 at Live Aid back in the 80's having the 100K in attendence all singing "...How long to sing this song". I just saw the tape of it recently and it's amazing. I'd say they made a connection with that audience alright.

I guess it can happen....I wouldn't bet the price of a $250 ticket on it.

"dad, Chris Martin needs to go to the school of rock"

Kids have such amazing (and funny) insight sometimes.

I think Jason hit on the key word - "spectacle". You can have a great stadium/arena show if it's compelling for some reason other than purely the music. I'd love to see a Pink Floyd concert at Giants Stadium, not just to see the guys stand up there and play but to see the big floating pig and the Wall and the other stuff that they do. The only other way that a stadium/arena show works for me is when you don't necessarily connect with the band but with the other audience members. I would think a Bruce Springsteen concert in Phoenix is not the same as one in New Jersey. The first concert I ever went to was Paul McCartney and Wings in the Garden. It's been 30 years, but I'll never forget the scream from the audience when he played "Yesterday". It was like those old newsreels of Beatles concerts from the '60s. (Go listen to Wings Over America, from that tour, and you'll hear it). I was about as high up in the Garden as you can be, and I can't claim an emotional connection with Paul, but that was a spectacle. I would see him in Giants Stadium.

For me, the Stones aren't either of those kinds of spectacle. I probably wouldn't enjoy the show unless I were sitting close, where it might be more of a "concert", but it's not in the budget.

In a couple of weeks, the White Stripes are coming to town. I'm dying to see them. But they're playing in Keyspan Park, which is a minor-league baseball stadium in Brooklyn, a shlep from where I live. I can't decide what to do.

Floyd can and has, The Stones can and do. Everytime i sa Aerosmith at a bif arena they rocked it. I remember seeing the Scorpions completely rock the Garden in 82. I happens, but you gotta want it Jason.

...that's 'it happens' not 'I happens'...
