Should WiFi Be Public Infrastructure? (continued)

Google's plan to wifi San Franscisco is a great move.

I want free wifi the same way I want free content.

I've been blogging about this for well over a year.

Free and easy wifi makes my online life seamless.

And it allows all sorts of easy applications to be built.

Google is doing a very smart thing.

But they are just doing it in SF to start.

This ought to be a wakeup call to Verizon, SBC, Cingular, T-Mobile and the rest of the carriers.

They'd better do this too.

Or let Google own the ultimate last mile connection in the always on connected world we are quickly getting to.

Don't worry, I imagine that Verizon, SBC, Cingular and T-Mobile all have their legal departments working overtime to figure out some way to file suit to block it.

Cingular is definitely in the mix. Apparently of 24 proposals, only one generates revenues by ads. Who would that be? Gavin Newsome says he is prepared to fight regulatory/legal challenges so that kind of publicity should float NYC's way.

(Fred - I think it will take active leadership to get it done in any city and I don't think we should expect the mayor of any city to make it the priority when there are so many other issues that truly affect health and living. Maybe you could consider bringing together a group who will go to the city and offer to do the heavy lifting - structure the scenario, review proposals, make a deal. I'm sure resources and leadership could get it done. I think it would be a rewarding project and by having the help of knowledgeable private citizens, probably much better designed).

Earthlink just got the contract to provide Wi-Fi for all of Philadelphia. Alas, not for free (approximately $20 a month and $10 a month for low-income users).

But, being a lifelong Philadelphia resident I am hesitant to be excited about this, we always seem to muck up everything, due to political back scratching and union bullying.

I'll believe it when I see it.
