Comment Spam (continued)

I have had it with comment spam.  I've tried policing it after the fact, but I can't beat it that way.

I've asked TypePad to allow me to put up a captcha, but they won't do that for every comment, at least I can't find a way to do that without requiring comment authentication which I don't want to impose on my readers.

So I've opted to approve every comment before it gets posted.  That really sucks for me because its just another thing I have to do every day.  But its either that or see my comment section filled with crap from assholes who I believe are about the lowest scum on the earth.

So if you don't see a comment get posted immediately, I am sorry.  I'd like to put a captcha in to see if that solves the problem, and maybe TypePad will do that someday.  Until then, this is the best I can do.

Fred, what's wrong with comment authentication? There are only a handful major blog platform, you create an id on each.. after that, signing in to Typekey is actually faster then filling out these fields here every time..

Fred,
Wordpress has very good basic filter. Every comment with 2 or more links is being held for moderation. At least for now it capture 100% of the spam comments in my blog without harassing the real readers

Do you not have a ban ip service on your admin? i have the same issue with my blog as well fred but banning the specific ip address keeps them away?

I have no problem with comment authentication, Fred. It's no imposition.

Apparently great minds run in sync :) At fastblogit we are installing captchas for comments. Since our comment system there is so open, we have been hit pretty hard with spam and my filters are way too tedious to hold up under the pressure. I'm hoping that captchas are the answer. Some discussion re this and the technology involved on my item captcha demo running on our server which i just made public to facilitate discussions.

Comment authentication is too much work. Thank you for not requiring it. Generally, unless I'm responding to someone I know personally, I don't bother with anything that has logins, I just click over onto something else instead.

Also, if TypePad lets you use the MT-SpamLookup plugin, I've had a lot of success with it counting URLs in comments - comments with more than 2 URLs gets blocked/moderated.

Saw that Neville Hobson posted about captchas in typepad, thought you might be interested to know that they appear to be in testing.

I'm confused about just what a comment spammer is? If someone addresses the topic at hand, they should be able to link your article to their site. Especially if the site's relate (blog site to a blog site etc.).

Hi,
we are testing a new free form-protection service (http://www.cerospam.com.ar), for blogs and for any kind of web site. It is easy to setup each form with this system, and it is very useful for protecting comment forms from spammers.
It is based on captcha method. Until now it seems to work fine. No matter what kind of blog software you are using, this is not a plugin.
Please, test it and do not hesitate to send us your comments!
Thank you.
