Valleywag
Is it just me or does anyone else think that Valleywag is over the top?
I am really not interested in the private lives of people when they leave work.
Maybe others are, but I find it really distateful.
It's out of my feed reader as of now.

Yes. It is WAY too much.
I also think that many of the people they're talking about do not meet the legal definition of "public persons" as far as the libel and slander laws are concerned.

It's interesting... I happen to agree with you whole heartedly Fred. But, your very post is probably the nod they've been looking for to validate their efforts. If I was Denton and read your post, I would immediately devote more resources to the site. The best slam against Valleywag would have been to completely ignore it, but now, it has legs...

It's for people who have no distinction between their work lives and their personal lives. I take a little work home now and then but I know where to draw the line. So like you, I'm just not interested.

How can Yahoo promote Denton's slime on Yahoo News, while Valleywag talks about a senior Yahoo executive and his wive's nipples?

I've got you beat.
Valleyway was never even IN my feed reader. I took a look at it and though.. "ehh.. no."

I haven't seen Valleywag, and won't bother looking at it now, but it's ironic that you say you;re not interested in the lives of people beyond work. Fred, your own site regularly features your life outside of work: your kids, the music they like, their activities, your family outings, your vacations, restaurants you patronize, etc... In fact, it is these posts that give your site depth -- I think of you as a guy I know (and we don't know each other) and not just another anonymous blogger.

There's an audience for lurid gossip - but the best subjects are Hollywood types, and the ideal reader isn't a Valley VC or entrepreneur. Valleywag disappeared from my bloglines feed list 10min after showing up!

read it twice. thought: jeez, this is high-school, teen-age, spoiled-brat crap.
took it out of my blog list.

Hi Fred,
Great blog. I've been a regular reader for a while and have no idea why I decided to make this my first comment ...
I think we'd agree that tabloid journalism has been successful for quite some time. Given his other sites and penchant for Gawker's gossipy/Wonkette style, is it any surprise that Denton and Co. have decided to go further down this road?
The fact that you and others in this community have decided not to read it does not surprise me. I'm sure you don't read The Sun, either.
There is a marketplace for this data, and owning "data space" online is like owning real estate offline: Generally speaking, a good investment. But from a pure business perspective, you've got to admit that it is a great idea.
As the net mainstreams, this kind of thing will only get bigger. 'Cause that's what lots of people want. Sad? Sure. But true.
Have a great weekend,
~G~
ps: We met a century ago when Bill, Jonas and I spoke to you before launching iwon.com ...

Never heard of Valleywag till you mentioned it. So I don't know what that says about me or it.

As far as I can tell, the people that they are focusing on are public persons. The Google guys, the google girl (making the cover of Biz 2.0 as well as 3 articles in BusinessWeak +++), (most of) the Yahoo people, etc.
Whether or not its in good taste? Excercise for the reader. Could be fun if it ever expands beyond the cattiness, currently seems to be subsisting on higlighting the insider gossip that was generally left unsaid until it develops decent contacts.
