Internet Radio Rocks

I got Sonos last month and now I can listen to Internet Radio (meaning any radio station in the country delivered via the Internet) on the multi-room audio system in my house.

And guess what?

I am listening to a ton of Internet radio.

WEHM - East Hampton, New York

KEXP - Seattle, Washington

KCRW - Santa Monica, California

Indie 103.1 - Los Angeles, California

Until now, radio was a local thing. But now, its a national thing. The best programming wins. I can listen to whatever radio station I want!

So please send me your suggestions for other great stations to add to this list (and the URLs of the streams if you know them).

WNCW out of Spindale, NC is the best radio station I've found in the United States; they have a 128K stereo stream to boot. Enjoy!

Love your blog. If you haven't checked it out before, be sure to give a listen to WOXY.com. I like the other internet radio stations, but WOXY is far and away my favorite. Best DJs, best music, best everything, and they're doing it without serious private funding.

WWOZ in New Orleans! Best jazz station on earth. http://www.wwoz.org/ for info, http://wwoz-sc.streamguys.com/listen.pls -- that's a standard stream. They also broadcast a lot of jazzfest on there. It's not perfect yet, they are still in temporary studios since Katrina. (As is the rest of public radio down there. One of the stations was broadcasting out of a coffeehouse for a couple of months -- WTUL, also worth a listen, for more independent music. http://www.wtul.fm, http://129.81.33.31:8000/listen.m3u )

Minnesota Public Radio launched The Current last year: absolutely fabulous indy music, publicly supported.

WERS in Boston has a live stream. Emerson College Radio is fantastic at all hours of the day. Highlights include 6 am to 10 am weekdays, 'The Coffeehouse', featuring new and old acoustic and singer-songwriter selections, very tightly edited for a not-too-folksy sound.

Living in the Boston area for the past 5 years, Id second that WERS 88.9 is really great. Really eclectic programming.

My favorite though is WZBC 90.3 Boston College Radio. They have a crazy array of programming, including a really great show of dusty lesser known records from the 60's and 70's. Check the programming list, though, as they have something for everybody.

As I sit here listening to KCRW's music stream, I've gotta pipe up for Radio Paradise. One of my top few streams...

The site is at radioparadise.com. They have a variety of streams including a (are you ready?) 192K MP3 stream! That's right, 192k!!

Here's the link to that stream.

Of course, now I've gotta check out the other streams people have chimed in with.... Sundays are SO tough...

I have to throw in another vote for WBER, http://wber.monroe.edu . I have the benefit of living the area so I can listen at home and in the car too.

My current favorite is http://soma.fm its a pure net station and their selection is great.

http://di.fm is good if you are into the techno scene.

Honestly I prefer pure net stations since they have more streams to select from.

I'm so glad you're writing about internet radio. I love independent radio, and browsing the net for new stations is a great hobby.

A few of my favorites are WKCR in your home town of NYC (fantastic jazz programming), KBCS in Bellevue, Washington (jazz and folk) and Concertzender in the Netherlands (classical, world music).

You've actually inspired me to post my whole collection of streaming internet radio links - if anyone has the same taste I do (jazz, classical, country, roots music), I think they'd enjoy browsing the streams.
