Nuggets

SrvI am in Austin Texas today, certainly one of the finest towns in the entire world for music lovers. And when I think of Austin, I think of South By Southwest, Austin City Limits, new bands like Spoon and Okkervil River, and old favorites like Poi Dog Pondering and The Meat Puppets.

But I also think of Texas Blues, Antones, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

And my favorite Stevie Ray Vaughan record, the one that I almost always pull out when I am in the mood to listen to serious texas blues, is his first, Texas Flood.

There cannot be a more aptly named record. The blues just flood out of this record.

If you can, get it on vinyl, because that's the way I listen to it and that's the way it sounds best.

I also like SRV a lot and was walking down 6th street in Austin on a visit last year when I heard a local band playing similar music, they are definitely worth seeking out. The Eric Tessmer band are playing B D Rileys's tonight and play Friends Bar every monday night. Its high octane blues with great feel and they play for hours....

Great record indeed, but I prefer "Couldn't Stand The Weather". Stevie's version of "Tin Pan Alley" is possibly the most awesome thing EVER recorded.

Great to hear a mention of Poi Dog Pondering. Was a huge fan back in the day. I went to college in Austin back in the late '80s and to me it still means SRV and Antones. Loved the place, but the economy back then was pretty dismal, so I had to depart in search of a job. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Very amusing :-)

I have unfortunately dumped all my spare change for this week on ice and coal delivery ;-)

Ah, Austin - second greatest place on earth. SRV, man, I feel him walking around. All his records were good.

Surely Eric Clapton will burn in hell......
