Nuggets

Poi_dog Last week I was in Austin and added Stevie Ray Vaughan's Texas Flood to my Nuggets list.  In that post I mentioned a band that I loved in the early 90s, Poi Dog Pondering.  Pamela Parker picked up on that in the comments and added that she also was a big fan of Poi Dog.

So that led me to pull out the two Poi Dog records we own and play them.  We own the self titled debut album and the follow up, Wishing Like A Mountain.

Both are great records with a wonderful earthy pop sound, influenced by american roots music.  But my favorite and the one I always think of when I think of this band is the debut record, Poi Dog Pondering.

The song Postcard From A Dream is worth the price of the record alone.

You can get the record on Amazon.

Many thanks to Fred for the link and for the memories of a band that was a big part of my life back in my immediate post-college years. I think I must have discovered them via an NPR interview or [Read More]

Amazingly, I was listening to Poi Dog today. I have the "Everybody's Trying" CD single with a very cool "Memphis Horns" version as well as a b-side called "You Think Too Much". Great stuff...takes me back to my college days....

One of my all-time favs. We welcomed in the new year with Frank and the gang and they still sound awesome.

I went to school in Austin and the owner of the coffee shop that I studied at was a good friend of the band. He gave me their first album and I've been a fan ever since.

I am also a huge Poi Dog fan. I caught at least 5 shows in Chicago. The best was at Denis Rodman's birthday party at a club called 'The Drink'. Frank and his crew put on an amazing show while Denis handed out shots. My favorite album is Pomegranate
"Complicated" is still one of my all-time favorites.

I remember as a student at UT when Poi Dog first got to town from Hawaii and started busking outside the Co-op, across the street from campus.

I also remember sharing a beer with Mr S. R. Vaughn in the Black Cat Lounge on 6th St.

Austin sure was a fun town back then....
