Cracked Screen

I cracked the lower right screen of my thinkpad on my trip to Aspen. It's actually a good thing because it's making me accelerate the conversion to my new MacBook Pro. But if you are going to crack your screen, the lower right is a good spot to do it, I was able to use the thinkpad without too much difficulty on the trip. The upper left would have been a much bigger problem.

I for once waiting to hear about your experience with parallel. I'm holding my decision to switch to Mac based on your comments.
I guess I need to come and complete the destruction of your screen :)

It's actually quite nice looking, those big black spots almost look like leaves growing on the screen . . .

please tell me how you cracked it. i have exact same problem with a new macbook. owned 3 days, and large black "leaf" in upper right hand corner. heard it crack as i was closing lid. apple says it is not part of the warranty

another trend in the making. crack fashion.

Noah,

I have a new macbook (2 months old) with a cracked screen as well. my dad and i have contacted mac about it and have also been told it is not under warranty, and that it will cost a whopping $755 to replace. I think mine cracked on a trip when i put it in my backpack and slid it under the bus seat. We think it may be a design flaw because the casing behind the screen is very flimsy. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone with your macbook screen problems.

i also have a macbook for 10 days now and the crack apeared while i was using it! it just apeared on the lower part of the screen and expended all over the screen, not the crack but the image distorsion.
Mac service says of course its off guaranty!!
thinking of taking further action as i think there is a problem with the design also.

Same happened to me. Just two weeks using my new macbook and then a nasty crack began expanding through the screen without even an advice. 100% sure it has not fallen, been struck nor anything like that. Is it really MY FAULT?. Really amazing!!...

I have a macbook as well. I have the same problem as you Noah, what looks to be an ink splatter on the top right corner. Now, a day after it appeared there is a hairline crack from the ink spot across to the opposite corner. I havent contacted mac, but I'll be extremely mad if it is not covered by the warranty. I did find this though, hope its helpful.

I had my macbook for 3 days and the screen cracked as well. What should we do about this? AND HOW DOES EXTENDED WARRANTY NOT COVER?

I got a crack on the screen of my Macbook yesterday. I closed it to go and watch tv. Came back 30 minutes later. Opened it to continue working and a crack and "ink-splatter" had appeared in the top left hand corner.
It must have happened whilst closing the lid. There was no one else there and nothing got in the way whilst closing..
I have taken it to Mac service and they did not recommend to send for a check, saying I would not get it covered and that it would only cost me even more money..
I did it anyway. I've only had it a few months and cannot afford to buy another so I am determined to take further action.

I had my macbook black for under 2 months and a crack appeared--it was somewhat usable for about a week, but now the crack has taken over half of the screen. I've argued with Apple about it, but they insist it is my fault.
Is there any way to take them to the Better Business Bureau with so many of us having the same complaints? Or is the company too large to conquer that way?

exact same thing happened to me the day i got mine. how can it not be covered?

Posted by: pete | Dec 28, 2006 4:43:26 AM

This happened to me too! I have no knowledge at all of anybody hitting my macbook or it falling or anything. there's this big ink spot with a crack. Is it seriously not covered? did anybody find something to do?

This also happened to me and I am taking it to the store tomorrow. I will let you know if I am able to accomplish getting it fixed without a big hassle. I have two macbooks that I have had less than a month and one of the screens is cracked, we don't know what happened. We have a macbook pro that we have had for a year with no problems and we have an HP laptop that we have had for several years with no problems. If anyone can help with this please let me know if you have found out anything and if you have any ideas what may cause the screen to crack.

SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME! it was in my friends trunk and when i took it out, i was horrified to discover a huge ink splatter in the upper left hand corner and one black line leading all the way down to the bottom right corner. my macbook is 3 weeks old tomorrow. with all of us having had this problemt, there's gotta be some way we can all get help....maybe that person above me who suggested we go to better business bureau?

I also just bought a MacBook, the screen cracked after a very small drop. My Apple tech said it's unlikely Apple will cover it, about $AU500 to replace it...

Posted by: Dave | Apr 1, 2007 3:07:57 AM

Well, I took my Macbook to the Apple Store, and as soon as they saw it they started telling me it was my fault and it would cost 800 - 900 dollars to fix. Basically, I went with my dad who is a pretty muscular guy and he caused a scene and started yelling at the employees working at the "Genius Bar" that Apple doesn't stand behind their product. That seemed to piss them off because after about 25 minutes of yelling and arguing they finally realized we weren't going anywhere and agreed to eat the cost of the repair and replace it for free. That's seriously sad that that's what it took to make Apple "care" about the people that are buying their product.

Posted by: Kyle | Apr 9, 2007 1:45:45 PM

My LCD on my Macbook spontaneously cracked, too. I have always used Apples and trusted their product; however, now I will no longer purchase anymore Apple products. I spent over $1600 on the Macbook and Apple Care, and they still won't replace the screen because they deem it "accidental damage." What B.S. The computer was NEVER dropped; however, they're basically accusing me of doing just that. It was fine in the morning and fine in the afternoon; however, I opened it a few hours later, and it was ruined. Now Apple's saying I have to pay $1295 to fix the screen! Please email me your story at crackeddisplay@hotmail.com. I'm going to the MA attorney general's office to file a complaint, and I need as many people as possible on board with the complaint.

The same thing happened to my b/f's computer. A crack just suddenly appeared about about a month after purchased. It was in a case and was always handled with care. Went to the apple store and they basically said it would not be covered. He sent it in for Apple care even though they said they would not cover it, because he knew it was not his fault and they returned it stating they ran some tests and it shows that it was hit in some sort of way. AND THEY ALSO STATE, that his macbook has been out for a while and nobody seems to have that problem, well BIG LIE, clearly after reading your blogs. Has anyone thus far found a way out of this...it is really expensive to fix and after paying over a gran for this macbook, I wouldnt expect to feed more $$ into it. Any advice or knowledge from anyone???

Same thing here, got the macbook 4 weeks ago, opened it once just to see a nasty crack...(no dropping of hitting!!), of course Apple won't cover it saying "I would have to speculate on how the LCD has cracked, it could have been the MacBook was dropped or bumped accidently causing the crack. Whatever caused the LCD to crack we would not cover the repair under under warranty. Kindly decline warranty repair on the cracked LCD" It's really sad, cause the computer itself is an excellent piece of equipment, hope Apple will recognize the fault in the future and find ways to compensate

Has anyone had their LCD screens repaired by MacService? They quote about $400 which is much cheaper than Apple's quote. What did everyone end up doing with their cracked screen>?

Posted by: Derek | Jul 30, 2007 8:48:49 PM

I was almost positive that I must have done something and just not remembered it, seeing as how I don't understand what else would have ruined my month old macbook. WHAT THE HELL.

I'm discouraged now from bringing it to the Genius Bar just to be told I need to pay $700 for it to get fixed. Seriously!

Posted by: Michelle | Aug 29, 2007 3:08:09 PM

I, along with the many posts above just encountered the same problem. I did not bumb, scratch, or bang my MacBook, yet a crack in the lower right hand side of the LCD has appeared. The "Genius" guy told me the standard answer that it is not covered and 800 dollars will take care of it. I can't believe Apple is ignoring its customer base. I have owned Macs since 1991 and still own a 7 year old ibook which has never had any problems of this sort.
DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK....great machine...yet too fragile and costly to repair...even with the extended warranty. It is just too much of a liability!
