From the WSJ this morning (email alert):
AOL is considering offering its services free to users with high-speed Internet connections, gambling that ad revenue will offset the loss of subscription fees.
C'mon AOL, just do it. You know it's the right thing to do.

Along with an open IM platform. The strategy of staying closed actually backfired in encouraging a host of other IMs to enter the market.

My mom just left the AOL fold after 10 years. She realized that she was paying for AOL on top of their (Time Warner) broadband service.
She's still paying to see her emails via AOL webmail.
She would LOVE to be back on full AOL, though.

I agree, but noted an interesting McKinsey piece recently that suggested there are short-term supply bottlenecks and agency issues which might limit the revenue potential.
