Song Of The Day
I got an advance copy of the new Bloc Party record, called Weekend In The City.
I loved their first album so much that this one is bound to be a disappointment.
But I've already found one song, called Waiting For The 7.18, that I really like.
[song removed at the request of the band]
I am writing you on behalf VICE Records, Atlantic Records, the Warner
Music Group, Wichita Records, Bloc Party and their management and
authorized to act on behalf of the owner of exclusive new music from
Bloc Party that is currently illegally being offered on A VC. The
illegal material is currently here: http://avc.blogs.com/a_vc/2006/11/
song_of_the_day.html and must be removed immediately. Please contact
me with any additional questions and notification of the removal
would be appreciated.
I know you've been supportive of our bands in the past, but this song
is not meant to be offered to the public at this time.

I loved SILENT ALARM, and the Remix album...but I've listened to this one at least 5 times, and I'm just not feeling it.
There are a couple tracks, like this one, that are good; but having seen them live a couple times in the past year, I really thought there were more songs in the rotation that would make it into this album; but there's at least one track I loved live that has yet to make it to an album.
Curious to hear your thoughts, after you give it a few more spins. Maybe it will grow on you more than it did for me.
But hey -- it's still WAY better than the new Shins record. That thing is a mess.

This is terrific, Fred, thanks for posting it. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the record.

Just curious Fred, how do you get advance copies of all these albums?

Great song, thanks for the preview. My S.O. just inquired from across the house what I was playing. Probably had it a little too loud.

Fred,
I read about this blog last week in Business 2.0. Tony and I can't wait to start one for Chop't. Thank you for the inspiration. You may know them, but my favorite new band, other than Bloc Party is TV on the Radio. If you haven't listened to them, you must.

Wow. What ever happened to the viral marketing wizardry that made the Arctic Monkeys famous? This is pathetic. They could have had 15,000 new listeners give the song a try and then tell 5 of their friends. Instead, corporatism knocks another young band into the dirt. Jeez.

Back to the band - I really liked Silent Alarm, too, but I wasn't sure exactly why I thought it was so good. After a while, I realized that the secret to this band (at least this album) was the drummer. I don't know who he is, but he is great, and his work is featured way up in the mix. The way I picture it, the enginer/producer was in the studio with the band, realized how good the drummer was and decided to push him to the front of their sound. Listen to the album from this perspective - the drums are more pronounced and more central to the sound of the record than any other album in my recent memory. When I saw the band in concert (on video), they were not as powerful as they sounded on the record - not as exciting. I think it was because the drums were not featured as prominently in the live mix. So, I am interested in hearing the new album and if the drums are not featured as much or are not as pronounced in the mix, I bet it won't be as good.
