The New Hall of Fame

Bob Lefsetz ranted last week about how lame the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is and called for them to "shut their doors".

Jackson followed that up with a couple of his own rants.

Jackson's specific beef is the lack of KISS, Alice Cooper, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy, Nazareth, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, UFO, and the rest of his heros in the Hall Of Fame.

Well maybe these bands are not famous enough, but they do nothing but rock.

We saw Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley go by us the other night at the Halloween parade (24 sec video).

Josh, born 20 years after KISS showed up on the scene was awestruck by Gene Simmons. And so I took him home and showed him this video.

Bob's right. Shut the Hall of Fame. Because YouTube is my Hall of Fame. Rock on.

i caught KISS summer before last when they opened for Aerosmith at Boston's Tweeter Center. I LOVED KISS in the early 70s. (I still "Cold Gin" is profound.)

KISS's Tweeter show was SO LOUD IT HURT and their platform shoes were HUGE as ever so they looked like terrifying mutant GIANTS and we had great seats -- which meant we were literally scorched by the flames and pyrotechnics.

AWESOME.

That video was f'in' awesome! Must have been around the Destroyer time period judging from the costuming, youthfulness, and comparatively small stage they were working. I know Bob and others constantly beat the mantra that Kiss had no good songs to which I say, bullshit, you don't what good songs are then. The whole Alive! album is worthy of HOF stature and Destroyer caps it all. Kiss’s omission to the RRHOF is as heinous as the absence of Black Sabbath until last year.

How could ANYBODY not start rocking out while playing that video? If you don’t start rocking out the minute it starts there is something seriously wrong with you.

Amen! 'Duece' says it all. The 'flying flea flicker' at the end seals the deal. Ace is so the man.

Gene and Paul have one consolation, they could buy the damn Hall if they wanted to with their countless millions of KISS dollars.

as someone who is from cleveland, i can say our city could care less about it.

The Rock and Roll hall of fame is a big joke. They completely ignore true pioneers and are now inducting bands that are not yet Hall of fame material.

Example: The Ventures outsold the Beatles in Japan during the 1960's. The Ventures mastered surf-guitar and had platinum hits such as "Walk Don't Run" and the theme song to "Hawaii 5-O."

The Ventures are still at it and until the Hall of Fame recognizes the contribution the Ventures have made to Rock and Roll, I will discount and dismiss the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a popularity contest.

The Ventures - a no brainer! Where would we be without 'Pipeline'?

This is my email discourse (I removed the names to protect the innocent)with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame sent last year:

Subject: Comments About Your Visit to the Museum

Contrary to what you think, we respond to virtually all comments.....good or bad. In fact, I'd love to hear your complaints so I can understand where you're coming from. Annually, we have almost 500,00 visitors from every state and 100 countries around the world. In turn, we get hundreds, if not thousands of positive emails and letters from these visitors. Simultaneously, we get a few who are dissatisfied with their experience. In an effort to make this place better each year, we sincerely want to hear what you think we need to be doing. Thus, if you want to take the time to email this or send me your phone number, I'll call you and discuss it with you.

My recent visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a complete rip off. I cannot believe how poorly conceived the museum is. For those who know little about the history of rock and roll, a visit to the rock and roll hall would do little to enlighten them. It seems like little thought was put into the presentation. I would go into details on of my thoughts on how things could be improved, but you're not listening, so what's the point. Needless to say I will dissuade people from visiting Cleveland to see the Hall.

A Disappointed Fan of Rock

You had us at Thin Lizzy. KISS was over the top!! Thanks for this morning's treat.

Anyone who wants to learn how to sell it all - give Gene a call, he's a marketing genius.

Fred,

That's a nice coincidence, I wrote a post about Clevedland's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame last week. Unfortunately, it's in French but I think it's a funny post (sort of "A Frenchman discovers America")...and I was saying at the end that fame is a long way to go : the 2006 inductees were Black Sabbath, Blondie, Miles Davis, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Sex Pistols. Not mavericks, right...
(and of course you can question whether Miles Davis is rock 'n' roll...)

Anyway, the post is here : http://ulik.typepad.com/flyintiger/2006/10/house_of_the_ri.html

and by the way, if you look at my blog, I have a cool new video mashup to play video clips (incl. Arctic Monkey), it would be a great way for you to put sound & vision to you r blog. Check it out !

Went there with my family a couple of years ago, when we were in town for a bat mitzvah. It reminded me of a larger version of a Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock Cafe. If not for a tape of an interview with Aerosmith talking about their first paying gig, which was at Staples High School in Westport (where we live), it would have been a complete waste.

And what's with no Mark Knopfler / Dire Straits? Blondie's in and they're not?

My Rock N Roll Hall of Fame inductees for 2007:

- Jigsaw ("Sky High")

- Pilot ("It's Magic")

- The Looking Glass ("Brandy," Jimmy Loves Maryanne")

- Frankie Goes to Hollywood ("Relax," "Two Tribes")

- Toni Basil ("Mickey")

- Danny Partridge (Danny Bonaduce) for excellence in Bass playing.
