Top 10 Records of 2006 - Number Two

Stadium_arcadium Josh and I are hanging out in the cafe next to the Prada outlet outside of Florence. He's got the new improved Denver Nuggets on his PSP and I've got my blackberry and typepad mobile. Life is good.

And its the perfect time to talk about Stadium Arcadium. Josh's favorite record of the year by his favorite band of the moment, The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Stadium Arcadium would be number one for sure had it been twelve or fourteen songs.

I listened to the entire two disc set about three times. Then I made an iTunes playlist of the top tracks and played that the rest of the year.

Stadium Arcadium has some amazing songs on it; 21st Century, Dani California (killed by radio overplay), Charlie, Snow/Hey Oh, Tell Me Baby, Hump De Bump, Torture Me, Strip My Mind and a bunch more. I am doing this from memory and don't have my iPod.

But the hands down best song on the record and the song that should have ended the record is Turn It Again. That solo by John Frusciante is the best guitar solo on a studio record I've heard in a long long time. They should have ended the record with the heat from that solo still smoking in your ears.

I can't help think woulda/coulda/shoulda with Stadium Arcadium and that's why its number two, not number one.

Agreed - Stadium Arcadium is better when it's pared down to a single CD. But you might want to go back and listen to the songs that you didn't put on CD.

A few weeks after SA was released I burned a CD of my favorite tracks to listen to in my car, but I listened to the entire double CD when at home. Turns out that some of the songs I didn't put on the CD are now among my favorites ("Wet Sand," for example, didn't make the initial cut, but now I absolutely love it).

You might actually name the band for those of us not in the know. Many of us thrive on WOM for music and intentionally neglect mainstream media. It gets dark underneath this rock.

Wait a second! I am a huge RHCP fan and their is a pretty significant reason why they made it a double. In an interview Anthony said the main reason(s) they went double was because they wanted to be one of the last bands to do a double CD. When you think about it this is a very powerful statement. The double CD is becoming extinct because we are heading into a singles generation with itunes. Like Anthony says in this interview the choice they made was a better option than putting out three cd's overtime. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn3ljS_llfA

Andrew has a powerful point. I'm not sure about dinging a band because they give you too much. It's really different than a startup's pitch where you indeed penalize for lack of brevity.

The Clash's Sandinista is a triple album w/ plenty of tedious diversions, yet it remains among my all-time favs. This was true even when I had to manually move the record needle to skip tracks.

#1 - you are so right about Wet Sand. I LOVE it, it has the most beautiful ending.. love the creaming stoff ;D,, and the solo. The thing about SA is that you have to lisen to it alot of times to find out witch numbers u like. To me it took allmost half a year.
