When Do You Find The Time To Blog?

I hear this all the time. It's the second most common refrain when someone mentions my blog (after "I love your blog").

I blog early in the morning. It's my favorite time of the day. I am awake and nobody else is. I've got a clear mind and the chaos of the day is not upon me.

I get up, wake up my macbook, put on some tunes, and write. It's wonderful.

Hi,
If it's not too personal, can I ask you at what time you go to sleep? If you go to sleep at 23.00 and you wrote this entry at 05.44, you only got 6 hours of sleep!

I agree, that's when I do my best thinking too (6am here now). How are you able to post so often while on vacation? Do you post in advance?

being in europe (well, the uk - sic) i tend to do most of my blogging in the early evening/late at night/early hours of the morning; ie, i have some 60 RSS feeds in my partially-filtered RSS-reader klipfolio's and most of the feed-noise comes from the usa - hence the daytime is pretty quiet for RSS events that may be relevant to my blogs.

if i see a feed item that is of interest i will blog it to one of my appropriate blogs and comment, if relevant. i find it a great way of bookmarking news, views and research for future reference - my blogs are now more of a repository for me in business/life and if other people find them interesting, that's great.

it enhances the value in reading about what's going on - news and views are no longer transient pings/events but part of an ever growing personal/public repository.

I always liked the response from Garrison Keillor when asked "How do you do it all?" (his radio, his books, etc.) and he said something to the effect of this:

"You can do it all, you just have to wake up a lot earlier than most folks..."

I did some digging and found a brief item backing up this quote here:

http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/features/deskofgk/991204_londontimes.shtml

I would also add (file under: Fred's "Thinking Out Loud" meme) that being able to "draft in the head" in advance makes the writing flow once at the keyboard. I stuggle with all the thoughts that arrive at times sans keyboard (admittedly rarer and rarer these days), and how best to capture them for later writing -- I've tried to keep to the "Getting Things Done" approach.

One/final add: If you can wake early, get excercise in prior to writing and THEN take to the keyboard, that's the trifecta.

Great post that's likelly a life's work.

Yes, Fred, but do you find yourself thinking about what you'll be blogging about while lying in bed, before you get up? That's when you know blogging's taken over your life... :-)

"I get up, wake up my macbook, put on some tunes, and write. It's wonderful." - wurd!

I blog late at night for the same reasons. Throughout the day, I'll throw up draft posts (bullets, links, thoughts) whenever I have an idea and then I'll revist the drafts that night. I'm usually thinking different things each day so it's a good way to close out the day by getting the posts up there.

Also, I find that blogging is a great way of keeping track of your thoughts and writing style. As important as it is to keep your content current, it's a good exercise to go back and read over what you've written to learn more about yourself.

If your blog is dependent on being the first on the scene, you're obviously under more pressure to publish your content but in most cases, I feel that a well thoughtout post is always more insightful than a quick post.

And yes, having music in the background is a must for me as well.

I am constantly impressed with your prolific-ness. Eh, is that even a word?

I wrote "Seven tips to find the time to blog" (http://www.liquididea.com/2007/04/finding_the_time_to_blog.html) in response to similar questions. With three children under the age of four, and a full time job, time is always tight. But I manage to keep on posting by (among other things) repurposing work I'm already doing, and substituting blog posts for other kinds of output.
