New Music Monday
2007 is shaping up to be an amazing year for new music. I am still in heavy rotation mode with Wilco's Sky Blue Sky, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, Modest Mouse's We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, Of Montreal, and The Shins. I am loving the new music.
But in the past week, songs from the Arctic Monkeys' new record started leaking and you can hear them on The Hype Machine. I love these guys and I am confident they are not going to suffer from the sophomore slump. They are just too good.
While at The Hype Machine it came to my attention that the music blog world has gone mad for Amy Winehouse. I first heard of Amy from a reader named David who left this comment on my Cortez The Killer post.
I'm sure you already know Amy Winehouse but I love this song (Rehab) so much, I had to post it just in case.

I checked it out and David's right. Amy has a cool sound. I was reading Mike Doughty's blog (when is his new record coming out?) and he also showcased the same Amy Winehouse video. So I figured I'd do you all a favor and do the same.
What is it about these cool british girls like Lilly Allen, Josh Stone, and Amy Winehouse? It sure seems like the UK is bringing a lot of great new talent over here right now.
Another artist that is getting heavy airplay on The Hype Machine is Feist. I like her sound too. Check it out.

yes, the uk music scene is very vibrant nowadays; it's great to see - being a middle aged former punk it's very evocative of the late 70s/early 80s seeing so much young independent talent - not so much the "we're a garage band" chutzpah as per the clash/etc of that era, now it's more "we're a myspace band" - doesn't have the same ring to it, but that's progress i guess!?
i agree, the monkeys new album will be a stormer - they've been doing some small gigs recently in the uk and the new stuff is getting very good feedback - to follow up such a strong debut album, so quickly, sure is testament to their abilities - alex turner is nicely developing into a new-era paul weller/ray davies - that's some accolade.
as for joss stone, no, please, don't put her into same category as amy w/etc - she's (stone) pretty much lambasted and ridiculed over here - rightly - for her faux pseudo anguished blues style; a very upper 'ok yah' upper class privileged young girl singing about love and pain is so disingenuous it doesn't have any credibility - ok, her voice is powerful, but the content/emotions therein are utterly vacuous - i think we'll see here vanish within the next year or so ... she ain't no new janis j.
by the way, if you like up and coming real, raw british music, check out 'the hair' - one of the best new bands/sounds i have encountered in a long, long time:
http://www.hairmusic.co.uk/
their first traditional format (ie, in hard copy media!) single is now available.
they also have all the usual download stuff via their myspace link, etc.

It's down to alcohol and more liberal radio programming.

I've been waiting anxiously for the new Doughty record myself. I know him and Dan Wilson finished all the recording, but he's not mentioned any release date yet. Hmmmmm....

The Hype Machine needs to ban people over 30 from accessing it. it's not fair to the artists.

You've got great music taste...just finished four days of back to back concerts at SXSW in Austin--plus the Shins played a day before it started...I'm a huge Arctic Monkeys, Wilco, Kweller, Belle/Sebastian fan among many others (I'd love to compare notes...) Hit my blog and check out a post called "Passion & David Letterman" referring to an up & coming artist, Dustin Kensrue of Thrice...you'll like him, I promise. Great blog, by the way...Jeff

I think it is a strange market (USA BIllboard) for the British to tap into as a lot of the 'Hot 100' is made up of generic R'n'B fodder i.e P.Diddy feat Marj J Jay Z Maria Scarey Pink and everyone. Also the charts include bland and really uninspired rock like Nickleback. It is good to see British women doing well in the USA Amy winehouse(Amazing) , KT Tunstall, Lily Allen, M.I,A, Joss Stone, Imogen Heap, dido. Odd how Kate Bush (Legend) is rather snubbed by America but is a household name throughout the world sans USA. There is a new British girl called Kate Nash who is doing very well but I do not think that the USA will 'get it' However, I could be wrong as I thought Lily Allen would be too Londonesque..watch and see
