Vinyl Records
We have a second home on the east end of long island that we use a lot in the summer and almost never in the winter. That's where we keep our vinyl collection and our turntable.
The arrival of summer means the reacquaintment with our vinyl collection. It's old (nothing in there post early 80s) but it's great. Every Stones record until Tattoo You. Most of Neil Young, Bob Marley, Elvis Costello (up to King of America), Bob Dylan (until Infidels), Led Zeppelin, etc etc. It's the merger of three collections; Gotham Gal's (Joni Mitchell, Jackson Brown, etc), mine (rock and roll), and a friend who donated his entire collection to us when CDs arrived.
This photo is not our collection. It's my friend the mediaeater's collection. Check out the fickr photo because it's got great notes and comments.
What's impressive about mediaeater's collection is that he's got lots of new stuff. I bought my friend Pat the new Arctic Monkeys on vinyl a couple weeks ago. I got Jackson the Arctic Monkey's debut LP on vinyl last year.
I think it's time for me to start buying vinyl for our own collection again. In fact, I think given the ubiquity of digital music on the Internet, there really is no reason to own mp3s. If we want to collect it, I am thinking it should be vinyl.

At home in NYC, I listen to my music on everything from vinyl to CDs to MP3. Heck, I still have a bunch of music that I listen to ON MD sometimes.
However, for the beach, I've just recently become a diehard Sonos/Rhapsody convert. It's perfect. You and your guests will all love it. Sonos can control the music in any bedroom (or by the pool, the deck, or the living room.) The Rhapsody music library is pretty massive. Though there are some strange gaps in it, there were very few things that we couldn't find.
Was wondering whether you've ever looked into it and what your thoughts were.

From age 3-8, I bought vinyl. From age 8-13, I bought cassettes. From age 13-19, I bought CDs. From age 19-24, I bought vinyl. From age 24-30, I downloaded most of my music as mp3s, rarely if ever paying for the privilege.
So when one of my favorite bands puts out a new record these days, I get pretty confused. Vinyl? CD? CD, then rip it to my iPod? Vinyl plus free download? What's a guy to do...

Fred - I buy most of my new music on vinyl. ALL of the recent albums I have purchased came with a coupon for a free MP3 download of the album. The new Wilco actually included a cd with the vinyl edition! I recently wrote about vinyl, using it as a metaphor for changes in the media industry: Quality vs. Convenience of Experience. In it, I compare a 1973 Dual 1229 turntable to my iPod Nano. And here is an earlier post on music as well. Thanks Fred!

MetroDad, sorry to break it to you, but you are a day late and a dollar short. Try searching this blog for Rhapsody and Sonos, I hope you have a few days to sift through all the related posts.
Fred, say it ain't so! Is this a concession? C'mon, you can say it:
"Jackson was right"

Whoops, Jackson. You're right. I should have known it would have been covered here in great detail at some point. I'm a relatively new reader to AVC. Thanks for the tip. I just read all the Rhapsody/Sonos posts. Now, I have to go off and research all the old Pandora posts!

Damn, that mediaeater LP collection is awesome. I think I hear Jackson making yummy sounds all the way down here.

Glad to see others caught between digital and vinyl. I think of it as a battle of experiences, not a battle of formats.
Ask yourself this: What's better? Being driven around by a chauffer (social internet radio) or driving an old stick shift roadster (vinyl). They're both good in my book, just depends on the experience I'm looking for.
Here was a Top 8 list I made for why vinyl:

If new releases are not available on vinyl, they're probably not worth owning.
I buy all vinyl and hope for the digital download to be included.

dumbest post eva ... Vinyl is as good as DEAD

What is the demographic of those that like to buy vinyl? Is it a nostalgia thing for those of us who cut our teeth listening to vinyl, or do kids today get that same thrill from the artwork, the physical weight of the music, the intimate feeling of taking the record out of the sleeve, putting it on the turntable and dropping the needle. I recently had to move the shelves my collection sits on, and in order to do that, had to take the three hundred odd records off of it. It took a long time, not because of the moving of the records, but because of sitting there and looking at them. It may be nostalgia, but then isn't that what the music is all about?

i got into collecting vinyl for the first time earlier this year, and the bug has bitten hard. mp3's/digital music are so sterile, i view music as a sensual experience, and getting a new vinyl with large format artwork to look at, putting it on the turntable and having to change sides means that you're forced to pay more attention and interact with it more.
treat yourself it's a great hobby

I bet this guy doesn't listen to music, he hears it.
Probably off a laptop.....
I must say the comments here have given my spirit a lift.
